Brunswick Company

Satan

The Brunswick Company is a regional employer whose presence in the story spans forestry work and a consequential rescue. Its camps provide the destination for Guillaume D’Anjou’s regular forest-warden rounds; elsewhere, company employees find a couple stranded on lac Squatec and save them from near death.

Forestry Presence

The company operates camps in the forests around Touladi. On Saturday, October 13, Guillaume, a forest warden, is due to make his customary rounds among them. The trip is part of the ordinary work that brings the company’s operations into the lives of people in the region.

That routine excursion also frames a family choice: Guillaume invites Loïc to come along in the jeep, knowing the child enjoys seeing wildlife along the forest roads. But Loïc would rather go by plane, and Guillaume does not press him. The company’s camps are thus the setting for an everyday outing that gives way to the boy’s more immediate interest in flying.

Rescue on lac Squatec

The company’s employees also intervene in a crisis. After Élie D’Anjou and his two Castonguay cousins seize a couple in their cabin at night, gag them, tie them up, and send them adrift in a boat, Brunswick Company employees discover them at the far end of lac Squatec two days later. The couple are barely alive; the account makes clear that another day would have been fatal.

Narrative Significance

The company is defined through concrete work rather than through an account of its internal structure or policies. Its camps mark the reach of forestry activity in the area, while its employees’ discovery of the couple makes that presence decisive in a local story of violence and survival. The same organization belongs both to the ordinary rhythm of Guillaume’s rounds and to the narrow margin between the couple’s rescue and their deaths.
