Battle of Pemberwick Island
StrikeThe Battle of Pemberwick Island was a prolonged but ultimately unsuccessful defense against the Retros’ advance through the Bridge. Recalled by Captain Granger as he explained SYLO’s wartime decisions to Tucker Pierce, the battle clarifies why SYLO activated its arks and why Granger regarded the protection of Pemberwick Island as a matter of survival.
Causes and Background
When SYLO came to Pemberwick Island, the attack was not merely approaching: the Retros had begun their attempt to come through the Bridge. Captain Granger had shown Tucker Pierce the battle’s aftermath from the air. The wrecked aircraft surrounding the dome were evidence of an effort to keep the Retro aircraft from breaking through; their presence marked both the defenders’ resistance and its failure.
Course and Outcome
The fighting lasted for more than a week. SYLO’s defenders failed to prevent the Retro aircraft from coming through, and once the defense seemed hopeless, they activated the arks. The aerial wreckage gave Tucker a visible clue to the battle’s scale, while Captain Granger’s account supplied its duration and decisive turn: the defense had reached the point where the original position could no longer be held.
Consequences and Significance
The arks were intended as a last stand. SYLO landed at Pemberwick Island, Catalina, Fort Knox, and a dozen other locations, extending the refuge plan beyond a single site. But the plan was compromised by the number of Retro spies who had infiltrated the arks. Captain Granger explained that his methods on Pemberwick Island had been ruthless, while insisting that he had done what he could to protect the ark. The battle therefore provides the context for both the emergency dispersal of SYLO and the severe measures Granger later defended: even the fallback meant to preserve their world was vulnerable from within.
