Overhearing the Plot

Huck's Brave Act The Eavesdropper Huck, watching the Temperance Tavern, sees Injun Joe and his accomplice leave with a bundle. He follows them to Widow Douglas's house and overhears Injun Joe's plan to slit her nostrils and notch her ears in revenge for her husband's actions. The Warning Huck runs to the Welshman's house and alerts him and his sons. They arm themselves and ambush the villains, who escape after a brief gunfight. The widow is saved, and Huck becomes an anonymous hero. The Secret Hero Huck insists on anonymity, fearing Injun Joe's retaliation. The Welshman keeps his secret, but later reveals Huck's role, earning him the widow's gratitude and a home.
