Nice

Nice is a city on the French Riviera that functions in the novel as a place of origin, a source of forged identities, and a destination for rescued children. It is the birthplace of Madeleine Rossignol, the mother of Vianne and Isabelle, and it is from Nice that Vianne claims to have adopted the Jewish boy she is hiding, Daniel, fabricating a story about a dead cousin there. The city also appears as the nominal home of Isabelle's false identity, Juliette Gervaise, whose papers state she was born in Nice. After the war, the OSE (Œuvre de Secours aux Enfants) in Nice is the organization to which Vianne entrusts her list of hidden Jewish children, hoping to reunite them with surviving family. The city thus represents both a lost maternal heritage and a strategic fiction used for survival and rescue during the occupation.
