Clanahan

Tide

Clanahan is a Curse-Breaker whose place in the story is established through his ties to the royal family and the books he left behind. Though he does not appear in the scenes that recall him, his friendship with Prince James’s father and his connection to Galahad’s work give him a quiet presence in the investigation of the seals and their guardians.

Identity and Royal Connection

Prince James explains that his father collected many kinds of books and was friends with Clanahan, whom he identifies as a Curse-Breaker. Their friendship had a material legacy: Clanahan sent the former king many volumes. The prince has kept his father’s collection in the house where he installs Galahad, and the library shelves hold hundreds of books. Clanahan’s association with the royal household is therefore more than a passing name; it survives in a collection that remains useful after the king’s death.

Books and Galahad’s Investigation

When the prince describes Clanahan’s gifts, Galahad immediately recognizes that the books could help him. He has come from the Fortress of Maith, where the masters watch over the Seven Seals (Edel’s Seven Seals), laid down by the first Curse-Breakers to protect Edel from Curse-Makers. Each seal has a guardian whose life is bound to it and whose duty is to keep it strong. The account does not establish that Clanahan personally made or guarded a seal, but his identity as a Curse-Breaker places him within the tradition that Galahad is investigating. His donated books provide a concrete link between that wider magical history and the prince’s household.

Place in Galahad’s Network

Clanahan is also among the people Galahad remembers in a letter: he sends his regards to Clanahan and Effrain. The gesture presents Clanahan as part of Galahad’s existing network, though the passages do not specify the nature or history of their relationship. Together, the letter and the library establish two different traces of Clanahan—personal regard and a substantial body of books. He remains offstage, but those traces connect the work of the Curse-Breakers to the royal family and help furnish Galahad with resources for his search.
