Vermi della canzone
VinelandVermi della canzone are tiny creatures whose voices and brief appearances interrupt Frenesi Gates’s nights with Weed Atman. First glimpsed in a motel room as almost invisible figures playing cards beneath Weed’s nose, they disappear when her breath scatters the minute shapes on his pillow. Years later, the familiar voices lead her to identify them again in an Indiana judge’s office, giving the motel episode a startling afterlife.
First Appearance in the Motel
During one of the rare nights Frenesi spent with Weed in an Anaheim motel, she woke to high, scratchy voices that seemed to come from the sleeping man beside her. Their chatter suggested a casual card game and everyday exchanges. Weed’s breathing remained calm and regular; he was not speaking. The mismatch between the voices and his stillness makes Frenesi’s first experience both intimate and disorienting: the sound seems to issue from his body, but he is unaware of it.
Frenesi leaned over Weed to see whether his lips were moving, and then inspected the bed with a small hammer after the voices abruptly fell silent and seemed to flee from her. She found no ordinary source. The sole trace was a multicolored smear on the pillow, which, close up, resolved into tiny, lightly drawn rectangles, each no more than a couple of millimeters long. Her breath dispersed many of them. By the following day they had all vanished. The shapes are not merely a visual impression: in retrospect, they were the little players whose voices she had heard.
Recognition in Indiana
Several years later, at midday in a grand, rustic Indiana courthouse not far from Brock Vond’s hometown, Frenesi heard the same phrases again at an ordinary human frequency. She was looking for her paycheck when she followed the voices into a judge’s sunlit, dusty office. Nobody raised their head as she appeared. The voices’ familiar exchanges now had a recognizable setting: the game was pinochle.
That recognition identifies the figures from the motel as Vermi della canzone, who had been playing preliminary hands beneath Weed Atman’s nose. The later scene does not explain how they came to be in the judge’s office or why their voices became audible at that moment. Instead, it confirms the continuity of Frenesi’s earlier perception: what had seemed an isolated, vanishing disturbance belonged to a presence that could recur years later, in a wholly different place.
Form and Significance
The creatures are made perceptible through fragments rather than a sustained, clear sighting: scraps of conversation, tiny rectangles on a pillow, and a breath that scatters them. Their scale and quick disappearance leave Frenesi unable to verify what she has encountered at the motel. The later recurrence supplies a belated key, changing the meaning of that night without removing its strangeness.
The interval between the two encounters is central to their effect. In Anaheim, the voices appear to belong to Weed, whose sleep gives no answer; in Indiana, the same words guide Frenesi to a card game she can name. Vermi della canzone thus connect an intimate, fleeting episode to a later public setting, while preserving the gap between hearing them and understanding what they are.
