Killing of Sagramatholou
WaspThe Killing of Sagramatholou is a swift, close-range execution by Mowry in an alley. The encounter turns an apparently practical effort to enter a bolt-hole into a killing, and ends with Mowry taking the victim’s official badge and leaving the scene by car.
Approach to the Bolt-Hole
Mowry points out a door set in the wall as the bolt-hole and says he will go around to the front to enter. While an agent works at the lock, Mowry watches the alley; no one is in sight. The agent’s attention remains on the door as Mowry takes out his gun and reminds him that he kicked an old man when he was down. The remark makes the grievance explicit, but the scene gives no further account of the old man or his connection to Mowry.
The Killing
The agent turns, one hand braced against the door, and finds himself looking into the gun’s muzzle. The weapon fires with a subdued phut, no louder than an air pistol. Sagramatholou remains standing, a blue hole in his forehead, his mouth open; then his knees give way. The abruptness of the shot sharply reverses the scene’s apparent purpose: Mowry had been discussing entry, but the immediate outcome is Sagramatholou’s death.
The Badge and the Escape
Mowry bends over the body and searches it quickly. He looks through the wallet and puts it back, but keeps Sagramatholou’s official badge. He then hurries out of the alley, gets into a car, and drives downtown to a point near a used-car lot. The contrast between returning the wallet and taking the badge is the scene’s precise material aftermath: Mowry leaves with an official token, while the killing itself has been carried out with little noise and in an alley where, moments earlier, nobody was visible.
