Little People emerge from Xiaoyi’s mouth and weave an Air Chrysalis

1Q84

The event in which five Little People emerge from Tsubasa’s mouth and weave an Air Chrysalis makes the uncanny production of the object a quiet, methodical process. While Tsubasa and everyone else in the safe house sleep, the Little People draw a nearly transparent thread from the air and use it to enlarge a pliable white object beneath her bed.## Emergence and Setting Tsubasa lies with her mouth slightly open, her cheek against the pillow and her breathing peaceful. Her shoulders tremble faintly from time to time, but she otherwise scarcely moves. Her hair covers her eyes. Her mouth then opens slowly, and the Little People emerge one by one, cautiously inspecting the space around them. The old woman nearby is deeply asleep and will not wake soon; the Little People seem to know this.

There are five of them. Each is initially about the size of Tsubasa’s little finger. After emerging, they writhe and unfold, like collapsible utensils opening, until they reach roughly thirty centimeters. They wear identical, unremarkable clothes and have indistinguishable faces, so no individual stands out from the group.## Weaving the Air Chrysalis The Little People jump gently from the bed to the floor and pull out from beneath it an object about the size of a large bun. It is white and highly flexible. Gathering around it, they reach upward and skillfully draw down a nearly transparent white thread. With that thread they begin to inflate the object, steadily making it larger; the process is quick enough to make the thread’s peculiar, suitable viscosity seem part of the work itself.

Their own size is not fixed. As the task requires, they can change it freely, and they grow to nearly sixty centimeters while working. They continue for several hours without speaking, laboring zealously and with the coordination of a tightly joined team. The transformation is not presented as a sudden revelation but as patient, collective workmanship: the Little People’s silent handling of the thread gradually gives the hidden object its expanded form.## The Sleeping House and Two Moons The work unfolds in a house made still by sleep. Tsubasa and the old woman remain motionless throughout, and all the women in the safe house are also plunged into unusually deep sleep. Outside, the German shepherd lies curled on the lawn, apparently dreaming, and gives faint barks from somewhere in its unconscious.

Above them, the two moons shine over the world with a strange light, as if bound by a pact. Their presence frames the nocturnal labor as part of the altered world’s larger order: while the household is unaware, the Little People emerge from a human body and construct the Air Chrysalis below the bed. The event’s calm, precise labor stands in contrast to its impossible circumstances, making the scene’s wonder depend as much on its measured detail as on its apparition.
