Apollo took over the Oracle of Delphi and founded the Pythian Games

Artemis

Apollo’s takeover of Delphi’s oracle and founding of the Pythian Games follow the killing of Python, a deed that leaves the sanctuary of Mother Earth violated. He converts that breach into a new religious order: the existing priestesses are made to prophesy in his name, and annual games are instituted at Delphi to appease Mother Earth.

The shrine and its priestesses

At Delphi, the oracles of Mother Earth are not merely a place but an established sacred practice. Its priestesses have been trained from infancy; they chew laurel, build fires with magic herbs, and sit in the smoke until they enter a trance. In that state they see what is to come and report it in riddles. Apollo’s action therefore takes over both a sanctuary and an existing institution of prophecy.

From violation to claim

The change follows the killing of Python at Delphi. Apollo recognizes that the act has already violated a shrine, and responds by claiming the oracles for himself and directing them to prophesy in his name. The narrative links religious authority to the aftermath of violence: rather than leaving the oracle under its former association with Mother Earth, Apollo asserts a new divine claim over its prophetic voice.

The Pythian Games

Apollo also institutes annual games at Delphi as a way to appease Mother Earth. Their name preserves the memory of the enemy the twins have just defeated: Apollo graciously calls them the Pythian Games after Python. The games thus carry a double significance in the account. They are a response to the offense against the shrine, but their name also binds the new Delphic observance to the killing that made Apollo’s claim possible.

Consequences and significance

The episode presents Delphi’s transformation as both appropriation and reconciliation. Apollo redirects the priestesses’ prophecies to himself while establishing a recurring public observance intended to appease Mother Earth. The oracle and the annual games make the consequences of the encounter enduring: Python’s death changes who speaks through the sanctuary and how the violation is commemorated.
