Lipara

Artemis

Lipara is named as the island off whose coast the Cyclopes work on a commission for Poseidon. In Artemis’s search for a bow, its surrounding sea marks the route to their hidden armory, making the island a waypoint in her acquisition of the Silver Bow rather than a setting for an episode narrated in detail.

Setting and Association

Hephaestus directs Artemis to go beneath the sea off Lipara, where the Cyclopes are making horse troughs for Poseidon. The island’s significance is established through this underwater workshop and its proximity to the place where the smiths can be reached; the account gives no further description of Lipara itself.

Role in Artemis’s Quest

After Hephaestus explains that Poseidon can grant access to the Cyclopes’ hidden armory, Artemis departs for the deepest oceans to speak with the sea god. The directions connect Lipara to a sequence of steps: access through Poseidon, an encounter with the Cyclopes, and a weapon forged with magic like that of Zeus’s lightning bolt. The bow is to make Artemis the wielder of the Silver Bow, so Lipara’s narrative importance lies in locating the workshop central to that objective.
