Fredrick
BlackwaterFredrick is a major space colony in the Lusatia cluster, within Tharcian space at Mars Lagrange 9 (Promise). Its immense cylindrical structure serves not only as a home for a population on the scale of a city but also as a productive economic hub; the destruction of barracks at Naval Air Station Richtoften makes it a wartime setting as well as an engineering achievement.
Scale and Setting
As Roland approaches Fredrick, the colony is described as a metallic giant beside which even the largest warships seem like remoras beside a whale. It measures five kilometers in diameter and twenty kilometers in length, and most configurations can accommodate at least 1.25 million people. The narration calls “engineering marvel” inadequate, preferring “engineering miracle,” and notes that thousands of such colonies exist throughout human-controlled space, from Venus to Saturn, for economic reasons.
The approach reveals the colony’s specialized layout. Its docking collar is a broad addition at one end of the cylinder, containing docking bays and an airlock through which Panzerters can enter or leave. Around the collar’s outer edge, pods rotate along long hallways arranged like wheel spokes. In most colonies, an agricultural ring produces much of the population’s food; at Fredrick, agriculture is also part of the habitat’s rich exports. Three wide arms extend from the cylinder’s opposite end, giving the station a distinctive, petal-like silhouette.
Arrival and Military Infrastructure
On 2 November 2135, the TNV Blackwater approaches the docking bay at Island Fredrick. Schuster reports that the laser guides have acquired a lock, and the ship is expected to dock in fifteen minutes. The brief exchange places the colony’s immense civilian infrastructure in the practical frame of an arriving vessel: docking is guided and timed, and the habitat’s scale is connected to the military traffic moving through it.
Naval Air Station Richtoften is located in Hangar Four at Space Colony Fredrick. Later that day, Roland pauses on its runway after pacing and hears what seems to be a rumble. Smoke rises from the barracks area, then an explosion tears through another building. He calls ground control to ask what is happening; as darkness approaches, it gives the fires an uneasy glow over the remains of both barracks buildings.
Wartime Significance
Fredrick’s presentation turns on the contrast between carefully engineered abundance and sudden violence. Its scale, docking systems, rotating pods, and agricultural exports make it a place organized for habitation and commerce. Yet the attack at Richtoften brings the war directly into that infrastructure, transforming the colony’s military station from a point of arrival into a scene of destruction. The distance between the two images is measured in the same day: a vessel is preparing to dock, and barracks are burning.
