Carter’s command of Cheng and Cheng’s reports on the investigation

Firewall

Carter’s relationship with Fu Cheng is a chain of command sustained by reports and personal loyalty: Cheng carries out Carter’s instructions and supplies intelligence that shapes Carter’s response to the investigation. Unlike Carter’s long-standing intellectual partnership with Tynnes Falk, the evidence presents Cheng as a dependable operative whose value lies in loyalty and action.

Orders and Intelligence

On October 14, Carter reads a message from Fu Cheng reporting that he has completed the task Carter assigned him. The report also tells Carter that police are still trying to access Falk’s computer. Carter believes their efforts will fail, but a further detail alarms him: they have enlisted Robert Modin, a young computer specialist. Cheng’s message thus gives Carter a timely account of both the investigation’s progress and a new technical threat.

Carter takes Cheng’s assessment of Modin seriously. Cheng warns that Swedish hackers have penetrated other countries’ defence systems and considers Modin potentially dangerous. Carter recognizes the risk: someone with Modin’s skill might break into protected networks and interpret the information he finds. The report does not merely confirm that the police are active; it directs Carter’s attention to the particular investigator most capable of understanding Falk’s computer.

Carter’s Dependence on Cheng

Carter regards Cheng as dependable and capable of fanatical loyalty. He and Falk had previously decided that such loyalty could be useful, making Cheng part of a plan conceived by the two men but put under greater strain after Falk’s unexpected death. With Falk gone, Carter has to manage the consequences alone, and Cheng’s reports become one of the means by which he follows the police response from a distance.

The relationship remains markedly unequal. Carter weighs alternatives, decides what action to take, and treats Cheng’s information as operational intelligence; the supplied scenes show Cheng carrying out instructions and reporting what he observes, not sharing authority over the larger plan. They do not explain how Carter recruited him or establish the full extent of his duties, but they make clear that Carter trusts him to act and to communicate consequential developments.

Wallander as a Shared Threat

Cheng’s reporting also helps Carter identify Kurt Wallander as the policeman persistently tracking the group. Carter relies on Cheng’s analysis and recognizes that the failed attempt to stop Wallander has not ended the danger: Wallander continues to follow the trail. The report therefore connects Cheng’s surveillance and assessment to Carter’s decisions about how to respond to the investigation.

After considering his options, Carter identifies a weakness in Wallander that might provide an opening. The scene establishes Carter’s decision and his attention to personal vulnerabilities, but does not specify what he sends Cheng or confirm that Cheng carries out this particular plan. That distinction matters: Cheng is shown as an important channel of information and an obedient operative, while Carter retains responsibility for interpreting the intelligence and choosing the next move.

Contrast with Falk and Narrative Significance

Carter and Falk had been confidants and collaborators for many years, combining Falk’s technical knowledge with Carter’s understanding of banking and finance. Their discussions helped shape the larger scheme. Cheng occupies a different place in Carter’s network: he is valued less as a co-architect than as a loyal subordinate able to report on the police and act on instructions.

Through this contrast, the relationship shows how Carter’s operation depends on people performing distinct roles. Falk’s death removes the partner who could translate Carter’s ambitions into technical reality; Cheng remains a source of intelligence and practical loyalty as the police close in. His reports heighten Carter’s awareness of Modin and Wallander, while the decisions they prompt remain Carter’s own.
