Kurt Wallander and Baiba: lingering feelings from a past romance
FirewallKurt Wallander and Baiba: lingering feelings from a past romance is defined less by an active courtship than by what remains after it has receded: memories, doubts, and Wallander’s difficulty in letting go. Their relationship is part of his emotional past, but it continues to shape how he reads intimacy in the present.
Earlier Doubt and Distance
While beginning to hope that something might develop with Elvira Lindfeldt, Wallander remembers having once misread his suspicions about Baiba. He had gone to Riga without warning her, wanting to discover whether another man was in her life. His suspicions proved unfounded. The recollection does not make him confident in his present judgment; instead, it reminds him that jealousy can lead him to test a relationship on mistaken grounds.
The Call from Riga
After roughly a year without speaking, Baiba calls Wallander from Riga late one evening. She says she wanted to know how he was doing. The conversation is tentative: they exchange assurances that they are fine, and a silence stretches between them before Wallander asks whether she ever thinks about him. Baiba answers that she does, and asks the same of him.
Wallander says that he thinks about her all the time, but recognizes that he is lying, or at least exaggerating. He cannot explain why he says it. The reply gives voice to a lingering attachment while also exposing its uncertainty: he does think about Baiba, but not with the constancy he claims.
What Remains
Wallander understands that Baiba belongs to a relationship that has ended and is fading. Yet he cannot wholly release the thought of her or the memories of their time together. After the call, he cannot decide whether he misses her. The uncertainty is captured by the image of a firewall: a barrier he associates not only with computers but with himself, and whose limits he does not always know how to cross.
The exchange offers no reunion or resolution. Its significance lies in the gap between Wallander’s words and his private uncertainty, and in the way an old relationship returns as a question he cannot settle. Baiba’s call briefly reconnects them, but leaves Wallander still unsure what the connection means to him now.
