Learn how to learn

Gunsoul

Learn how to learn is the principle Arc offers for surviving as a cultivator: experimentation and the willingness to push one’s limits matter more than simply following instructions. Yuan recognizes the phrase in Arc’s teaching method, which asks him to discover techniques for himself rather than receive a prescribed routine.

The Principle in Arc’s Teaching

After Yuan asks whether he should form a Barrier behind himself to avoid falling or optimize the cylinder, Arc declines to choose for him, telling him to figure it out. Yuan identifies a pattern in that response: Arc has repeatedly encouraged him to work out techniques independently instead of simply explaining how to practice them. The principle is therefore demonstrated through instruction before it is stated outright. Arc argues that cultivators who do not experiment and test their limits are doomed to perish, and that few learn how to learn. The emphasis is not on learning a fixed technique alone, but on acquiring the capacity to discover and adapt techniques through one’s own efforts.

Contrast with Rote Training

The idea unsettles Yuan because his limited experience of Sect training has offered a sharply different model: endless drills, spars, and lessons, accompanied by commands to follow orders, climb the ranks, and never question or disobey. Against that system, Arc’s approach gives independent judgment a central place. Yuan finds it more appealing than the Stoneskin Sect’s lessons, making the contrast a turning point in how he understands cultivation.

Practice and Application

Arc’s method has a practical consequence when she returns Yuan’s weapons. Having decided that he can handle himself, she gives him back both Saint Heckler and Kalash Angel and leaves him to discover their capabilities in the field. The moment extends the lesson beyond the techniques he has been trying to master: learning requires applying what one has and finding out what it can do, rather than waiting for complete instruction.
