The Gun always comes for us eventually

Gunsoul

The expression The Gun always comes for us eventually names the threat built into a Gunsoul’s continued existence: sooner or later, The Gun arrives to challenge them. It is both a rule of the Gunsoul cycle and a warning with immediate consequences for Yuan Guang. After he kills Slash, the reckoning he had postponed becomes a pursuit closing in on his companions, turning an apparently distant certainty into the crisis ahead.

A warning about the Gunsoul cycle

The warning appears in a letter from Yuan Guang’s teacher, who insists that the danger is not a matter of whether The Gun will come, but when. The repeated final word in the letter’s formulation—“Always.”—makes the thought feel less like a prediction than a law. Its brevity also gives it the force of hard-earned counsel: Yuan Guang is told to prepare, not reassured that he can escape the danger.

Kaguya later explains the mechanism behind that certainty. Once a Gunsoul fulfills the quest for which they rose from the dead, The Gun comes to challenge them; Kaguya presents this as the cycle that sustains Gunsouls’ existence. The warning therefore joins an intimate threat to a larger structure. The Gun is not simply an enemy who happens to pursue Yuan Guang. The confrontation follows from what he is and from the purpose that brought him back.

The bargain comes due

The danger becomes personal when Yuan Guang connects the rule to his own past. He suspects that, after killing Slash, he already understood that this reckoning would come. The Gun had granted him time and power to settle that score in exchange for a promised duel. Once Yuan Guang had fulfilled his part, The Gun had fulfilled its end of the bargain; now the price was due.

That history gives the expression a particular edge. Yuan Guang’s victory over Slash is also the point at which his freedom to postpone the next conflict narrows. The strength that helped him complete his revenge did not remove the danger; it brought him to the threshold of the promised confrontation. The warning does not make his achievement meaningless, but it makes clear that one completed purpose cannot secure lasting safety.

Arc as precedent

Yuan Guang asks whether Arc escaped the same fate after killing her tormentor. Kaguya’s account makes her a precedent, but not an exception to the rule. After Arc killed the person who had tormented her, The Gun pursued her relentlessly across the wasteland. She fought it and tried to destroy it, but managed only to buy time—and that time came at the cost of her friend.

Kaguya also suspects that The Gun eventually lost interest after Arc cracked her core. In her explanation, Arc was no longer a fitting vessel and survived on borrowed time. Her experience distinguishes evasion from release: even someone who can fend off The Gun does not thereby end the pursuit. The possibility that Arc’s damaged core altered the terms of that pursuit is presented as Kaguya’s suspicion, not as a general escape Yuan Guang can count on.

The warning becomes present tense

The expression’s certainty is borne out when The Gun catches up with Yuan Guang’s party. As Orient travels across a desert of sterile stone, the group passes the remains of a station without stopping. Gunsmoke thunderclouds gather behind them, a bullet drizzle falls, and Yuan Guang spots a cruiser on the ground below the storm. He cannot see its driver, but senses a malevolent presence glaring back through the veil. The narration confirms the threat: The Gun has caught up to them.

The approach follows a second catastrophe. At dawn, the History Road’s landmarks blaze together, forming a circle of light around Battletown’s ruins. A surge of qi shatters the road, sinks the land beneath sand and mud, and sends part of the region into the Oil Sea, whose black flood washes away what remains. The destruction lasts only minutes, but buries years of construction. Yuan Guang recognizes the gulf between his power and that of Arc and Manhattan—and understands that defeating The Gun will require him to intensify his training because time is running out.

Seen across these moments, The Gun always comes for us eventually is not just a maxim about inevitable danger. It connects Yuan Guang’s completed revenge, the established cycle of Gunsouls, Arc’s costly resistance, and the approaching threat on the desert horizon. Its force lies in the movement from warning to explanation to arrival: the future the phrase names is no longer remote once The Gun is close enough for Yuan Guang to sense it.
