Welcome home
Gunsoul“Welcome home” is Yuan Guang’s greeting to Holster in the book’s closing scene, where two simple words give emotional shape to their reunion. After watching over her from above and descending to meet her, he speaks; she smiles, and the ending presents their shared world as whole again.
The Closing Scene
The words come after Yuan Guang has been flying above Mom’s locomotive, his thrusters trailing smoke. Holster guesses that he has been observing her from afar with his sharp eyes, ready to intervene if trouble arises, and loves him for that vigilance. He then descends to greet them, turning distant protection into a face-to-face welcome.
His appearance makes the greeting especially affecting: his barrel-shaped face and demonic body frighten newcomers, but those able to see past them recognize the brightness within. Against that imposing exterior, the simplicity of his welcome offers Holster familiar reassurance. The narration notes that his two words have never failed to lift her spirits.
Home in a Moving World
The scene places the greeting aboard Mom, the vast locomotive that has become home to Holster, Yuan Guang, and a growing community. Mom has accumulated nearly a hundred wagons and houses more than three thousand souls; she has grown so long that Holster sometimes cannot see her far end across the horizon. The scale makes “home” more than a private refuge: it is also the shared world Yuan Guang watches over and returns to greet.
The closing exchange remains intimate within that immense setting. Yuan Guang’s watchfulness, Holster’s affection, and her answering smile give the phrase its force without a longer declaration. The narration concludes that, with his daughter smiling back, all is right in the Unmade World. The greeting thus serves as a compact emotional resolution: protection becomes welcome, and welcome confirms belonging.
