Spirit-Train Rescue of Yuan
GunsoulThe Spirit-Train Rescue of Yuan is a turning point in the attack on Fleshmarket: Orient’s locomotive rams The Gun at the instant it is preparing a fatal shot, giving Yuan a chance to live and drawing his friends into immediate danger. The rescue is not a clean escape. The train’s impact disrupts The Gun, but the demigod soon stops the locomotive and sends it off the rails, forcing Yuan to decide whether to risk his life for the people aboard.
Background and Stakes
The intervention takes place during The Gun’s assault on Fleshmarket. The threat has already become overwhelming: the gunsmoke clouds release millions of qi-charged bullets over the settlement, with shots and detonations turning the bombardment into a rain of destruction. Yuan and Revolver respond with layered Barriers, each forming a dome specifically suited to the attack. The protection buys them shelter, not safety; the bombardment continues, and The Gun eventually turns its attention to Yuan.
At that moment, The Gun builds light inside its barrel-nose for what appears to be a fatal shot. Yuan faces it without begging or kneeling. The locomotive’s intervention therefore arrives at the brink of an execution, not during a lull in the fighting. Its arrival changes the immediate balance: the attack that had been aimed at Yuan is interrupted by an unexpected force coming from the east.
The Collision and Its Force
A metal locomotive strikes The Gun in a catastrophic collision. Yuan recognizes the vehicle as the familiar Spirit-Train, but its speed makes the sight difficult to credit: something so large and long should not move faster than a bullet. A Feng Shui corridor of Qi drives it forward with enough force to push The Gun back and make it misfire.
The shot that escapes The Gun does not hit Yuan. A shining meteor of Qi streaks toward the horizon, where its explosion reduces distant hills to rubble. The collision thus rescues Yuan not by defeating The Gun, but by spoiling its aim at the decisive instant. The scale of the missed shot makes the narrowness of that reprieve plain: the projectile still carries enough force to devastate the landscape far beyond the fight.
The Train Becomes a Target
Yuan’s shock gives way to relief when he senses Holster’s familiar Qi aboard the train and recognizes Orient. The Spirit-Train appears, by some miracle, to have survived The Gun’s bombardment untouched. Its arrival is therefore more than a weapon striking from the side: it brings people Yuan wants to protect into the battle, alive and within reach.
That relief lasts only briefly. The Gun pushes against the Spirit-Train, whose mass and speed cannot overcome the demigod’s inhuman strength. It brings the locomotive to a dead stop and prepares to fire at point-blank range. Revolver’s Qi-charged projectile hits The Gun from the west but leaves no dent. Arc then lands a much more damaging shot, blasting away half of The Gun’s metal face and making it flinch. The train has broken the immediate line of attack on Yuan, but it has also become the next target; the rescue has not carried its passengers beyond danger.
The Gun wails and kicks the Spirit-Train away with monstrous strength. It derails beside the ruins, its wheels spinning in empty air and its chimney breathing smoke. Revolver rejoins Yuan and tells him that his friends are aboard, then asks whether he is ready to wager his life to save them. Yuan answers with a sharp nod. He refuses to let Orient and Holster perish, whether Arc permits it or not. The collision has saved him from a shot, but the scene’s stakes now turn on whether he will risk himself in return.
Consequences and Significance
The rescue establishes both the reach and the limits of Orient’s power. The locomotive can move with astonishing speed when propelled through a Feng Shui corridor of Qi, hit The Gun hard enough to force a misfire, and survive the earlier bombardment. Yet it cannot withstand The Gun’s direct physical strength. Its derailment turns what might have been a simple extraction into a renewed crisis around the people aboard.
The sequence also binds Yuan’s survival to an obligation. Revolver’s question makes the choice explicit: Yuan has been given a chance to escape death, but his friends remain exposed. His decision to protect Orient and Holster carries the rescue forward as an act of loyalty rather than treating it as a lucky interruption. Later, Yuan remembers that Revolver saved his life twice, first from Elder Polio and then from The Gun, and resolves to find a way to free him from The Gun’s curse. The locomotive’s intervention thus becomes part of a larger debt of care among allies, even as the battle’s next turn leads into Revolver’s soul and a place where violence cannot occur.
