A Shared Experience Lois also suffers from insomnia and sees auras. Their shared experience bonds them. They are not crazy – they are awake.

The World of Auras

A New Reality The First Vision Ralph steps out of the Rite Aid and sees a world transformed. People are surrounded by colored envelopes of light; balloon-strings rise from their heads. The world is more beautiful and more terrifying than he ever imagined. Learning to See Ralph learns that the auras reveal hidden truths: health, emotions, even the future. He can read people like books. The power is intoxicating and frightening. The Cost of Vision The auras come and go, but they leave Ralph exhausted. He realizes that seeing the hidden world requires energy. He must learn to balance his new perception with his need for rest.

The Return of the Auras

The Final Awakening The Auras Return Five years later, Ralph begins to see auras again. The deathwatch returns. He knows that his time is short, but he is grateful for the gift of sight one last time. A Final Vision In his last moments, Ralph sees the world in all its hidden glory. He sees the deathbag around the green Ford, the auras of the people on Harris Avenue, and the grinning figure of Atropos. He understands the cosmic struggle. The Gift of Sight Ralph's insomnia has given him the ability to see beyond the surface of things. It has allowed him to fulfill his destiny. He dies with his eyes open, seeing the light behind the darkness.
