The Deathwatch Begins

The ticking seems to come from everywhere – the walls, the furniture, from within Carolyn herself. It is a harbinger of her impending death. The Sound of Mortality The deathwatch is the sound of time running out. It is a reminder that all Short-Timers must die. Ralph learns to recognize it as a natural part of life. A Universal Truth The deathwatch is not just for Carolyn. It ticks for everyone. Ralph will hear it again when his own time comes.

The Bald Doctors' Role

The Agents of Death Clotho and Lachesis Clotho and Lachesis are agents of Death who serve the Purpose. They cut the life-cords of those whose time has come, doing so with love and respect. They are not evil – they are necessary. Atropos the Rogue Atropos is a rogue agent who serves the Random. He cuts cords for his own amusement, taking souvenirs. He represents the chaotic, senseless side of death. The Purpose of Death Death is not an end but a transition. The bald doctors are physicians of last resort, helping Short-Timers pass to the next world. Their work is sacred.

Ralph's Death

A Peaceful Passing The Final Ticking Ralph hears the deathwatch in his own chest. He knows that his time has come. He accepts it without fear. The Cut Clotho and Lachesis appear to cut his life-cord. Ralph shakes their hands one last time. He feels no pain, only peace. The Vision Ralph shares a vision with Lois: a dark barn split by brilliant seams of light. It is a representation of the universe, where dazzling light exists behind the darkness. Death is not the end – it is a doorway.
