The Injunction Against Peredur Asking About Marvels
MabinogionThe Injunction Against Peredur Asking About Marvels is a rule of conduct given to Peredur by his first maternal uncle as part of his knightly education. It tells him to refrain from asking about wonders and assigns responsibility for any unexplained marvel to the teacher who fails to provide a courteous explanation. When Peredur later witnesses a court’s lamentation over a bloodied spear and a man’s head, he observes the injunction rather than asking what they signify.
The Rule and Its Teacher
Peredur’s uncle presents the injunction while offering to teach him the customs of different countries, courtesy, gentleness, and noble bearing, and to raise him to knighthood. The rule concerns what Peredur should do when he sees something that causes wonder: he is not to ask its meaning. If no one volunteers an explanation, the resulting breach of courtesy is the teacher’s responsibility, not Peredur’s. The instruction thus makes restraint part of Peredur’s education while placing the burden of explanation on his mentor.
The Marvels in the Hall
The rule is tested when Peredur visits another uncle, who is the brother of the man who hosted him the previous night. During their conversation, two youths enter carrying a large spear from whose point three streams of blood flow to the ground. The assembled company wails, but the uncle continues speaking with Peredur. Two maidens then enter carrying a salver with a man’s head surrounded by blood, and the court’s outcry rises again before subsiding.
Peredur’s Restraint and Its Cost
Although the hall’s reaction marks the objects as significant, the second uncle does not explain them. Peredur does not ask about either marvel, explicitly holding back because his uncle has not told him their meaning. His conduct follows the instruction literally, but the episode ends without revealing what the spear or the head signifies. The rule therefore governs not only Peredur’s courtesy but also what he learns: where an explanation is withheld, his restraint leaves the mystery intact.
