Durona Group

Memory

The Durona Group is a medical group whose work on Miles Vorkosigan’s cryo-revival becomes central to the later discovery that he concealed post-revival seizures from Imperial Security. The group’s departure from Jackson's Whole scatters the relevant medical records, while its hoped-for new clinic on Escobar offers Miles a possible route to treatment away from official scrutiny. Its significance lies in both its medical connection to Miles and the delayed, fragmented record trail left by its relocation.

Medical Work and Miles’s Cryo-Revival

Miles identifies Dr. Durona as his cryo-revival surgeon. After his return from stasis, he experiences several convulsions, each lasting two to five minutes and apparently triggered by extreme stress. The surgeon advises that they might resolve on their own, as Miles’s memory loss and shortness of breath have; when the episodes seem to diminish, Miles withholds them from his ImpSec physicians. His account establishes the group’s connection to consequential medical care, though the evidence identifies the surgeon rather than describing the group’s internal structure or clinical methods.

The consequences of that advice extend beyond Miles’s health. He treats the apparent improvement as a reason to keep the seizures secret, but the episodes later become a central concern in his fitness for duty and his relationship with ImpSec. The Durona medical records therefore preserve information that Miles chose not to report through the official channels responsible for assessing his fitness.

Relocation and the Escobar Clinic

The Durona sisters are described as refugees who hurriedly left Jackson's Whole. Miles wonders whether they have succeeded in establishing a new clinic on Escobar, far from their former home; the passage presents the clinic’s success as uncertain, not confirmed. Mark is still sending them money, according to Miles’s last communication with him, suggesting continued support for their plans without specifying how the clinic is funded or operated.

Miles considers taking leave under the pretext of visiting his parents on Sergyar, then traveling from there to Escobar to consult Rowan Durona. He hopes to have his head treated without creating records for ImpSec to find. He and Rowan had previously had a brief love affair during his cryo-amnesia, which Miles regards as an accident; he believes they parted on good terms and wonders whether she would treat him discreetly. The proposed visit remains a plan in his thoughts, rather than evidence that he reaches the clinic or receives treatment there.

Scattered Records and Their Recovery

The group’s hurried departure from Jackson's Whole leaves its records dispersed between Escobar and House Fell. House Fell does not readily provide additional information, and the delay in locating and processing complete copies of Miles’s surgeon’s records lasts for months. Only when an analyst recognizes their significance are the records examined in detail. Their fragmented custody thus turns the group’s relocation into a practical obstacle to understanding Miles’s medical history.

When the records finally surface, Simon Illyan focuses not simply on the seizures but on Miles’s failure to disclose them to the ImpSec physicians who were trying to return him to duty. The documents connect the post-cryo-revival episodes to a decision that Miles had made privately, and provide information that the institution had not received from him. The Durona Group is not shown directing the subsequent investigation; the importance of its records is that they eventually make the concealed medical history legible to ImpSec.

Significance in the Plot

The group occupies a narrow but consequential position between private medicine and state security. Miles imagines the Durona clinic as a place where he might seek care without official scrutiny, while the delayed arrival of the surgeon’s records eventually brings his medical history into the institutional process he had tried to avoid. The contrast is not between a documented cure and an official diagnosis: the evidence shows neither a completed visit to Rowan nor a new treatment by the group. Instead, it makes the Duronas’ dispersed records—and the time required to recover them—the link between Miles’s private concealment and ImpSec’s later knowledge.
