House Bharaputra is one of the Jackson’s Whole Great Houses considered during the investigation into the bioengineered agent used against Simon Illyan. Its connection to Bharaputra Labs, a former employer of Vaughn Weddell and Canaba, gives it a point of association with the inquiry, but the evidence does not establish that the House made or commissioned the agent.

Connection to the investigation

Miles initially notes that the agent does not appear to come from Bharaputra Labs, where Weddell and Canaba had previously worked. That would have been a convenient lead, but it does not rule out other Jackson’s Whole houses as possible sources of a small, secretly commissioned project.

Consideration as a possible suspect

Miles weighs whether the attack might have been retaliation for Admiral Naismith’s past dealings with Jackson’s Whole. House Bharaputra had been more angered by him than House Fell, but Miles considers it unlikely to risk a private conflict with Barrayar when no obvious profit would follow. The House therefore remains part of the investigation’s range of possibilities, not an identified participant in the sabotage.
