The Gray Men follow Momo and Cassiopeia to Nowhere House

Momo

The Gray Men follow Momo and Cassiopeia to Nowhere House in a pursuit that turns a reunion into an unintended guide for the enemy. Cassiopeia insists on going to Professor Hora, and the Men in Gray, who have secretly watched Momo, let the pair travel freely so they can follow them. Their apparent advantage ends at Never Lane: when the gray host tries to enter, its leaders disappear before Momo’s eyes.

Reunion and decision to go

Momo has just been reflecting that Cassiopeia may already have found her way back to Professor Hora when something nudges her bare foot. She looks down and finds Cassiopeia alive and present, with the words HERE I AM AGAIN on her shell. Momo immediately tucks the tortoise under her jacket and looks around for any Men in Gray still hiding nearby. The square seems quiet, but the reunion takes place under observation.

Momo tells Cassiopeia what has happened since they last met, then asks what they should do. Cassiopeia’s answer is GO TO HORA. Momo objects that the Men in Gray are searching everywhere and that their current location is the one place where they are not. Cassiopeia does not accept safety as a reason to stay: her shell says WE’RE GOING ANYWAY. When Momo asks why the tortoise must crawl there alone, Cassiopeia replies, THE WAY’S INSIDE ME. She sets off, with Momo following slowly behind.

The hidden pursuit

The Men in Gray have remained in the shadows around the square, keeping a surreptitious watch on Momo. They witness her reunion with Cassiopeia and recognize its usefulness. Rather than seize the pair, they decide to let the tortoise lead them to Professor Hora. Their reasoning depends on the fact that Cassiopeia is acting of her own will and does not know she is guiding anyone else; the Men in Gray expect to reach their destination without force.

They call off the broader search and order the other agents to join them at the square. Their instructions are precise: none is to be seen by the two unsuspecting guides, and none is to obstruct their passage. The agents are to follow at leisure, keeping out of sight. The contrast is central to the episode’s tension: Momo and Cassiopeia believe they are making their own way through danger, while their enemies quietly turn that journey into a trail.

The road to Nowhere House

The journey tests Momo’s strength. She is more exhausted than she has ever been and at moments thinks she may sink down and fall asleep. She forces herself onward, watching her feet and Cassiopeia rather than looking around. The tortoise’s slow pace makes the walk feel longer, but Momo continues because the route offers the prospect of seeing Professor Hora again.

Eventually the street grows paler, and they reach the district where the light is neither dawn nor dusk and the shadows run in different directions. The forbidding white houses have cavernous black windows; nearby stands an egglike monument on a black stone plinth. Momo’s courage rises at the thought that she will soon see Professor Hora, and she asks Cassiopeia to go faster. The shell answers MORE HASTE LESS SPEED. Cassiopeia crawls even more slowly, yet Momo recognizes that, as on their previous journey, they make better progress at that pace: the street seems to glide beneath them faster the slower they go.

Never Lane and the failed interception

Cassiopeia turns into Never Lane on the way to Nowhere House. Momo remembers that she made no headway there until she turned around and walked backwards, so she does the same. The change in direction brings the hidden threat into view: the Men in Gray form a moving wall, rank upon rank filling the whole width of the street as far as Momo can see. She cries out in terror but cannot hear her own voice, and continues backward down the lane, staring at the advancing host.

The attempted advance does not succeed. As the leaders try to enter Never Lane, they vanish before Momo’s eyes: first their outstretched hands, then their legs and bodies, and finally their faces, frozen in surprise and horror. The sequence overturns the Men in Gray’s confidence that they can follow unnoticed and reach Professor Hora by using Cassiopeia as an unwitting guide. The rules of the place, which Momo remembers and obeys by walking backward, block the pursuers at the threshold.

Significance

The episode makes the journey’s strange geography decisive to the chase. Cassiopeia’s shell gives Momo clear directions, but it does not reveal that the Men in Gray have turned those directions to their own purpose; meanwhile, the tortoise’s insistence on a slow pace is shown to be effective rather than merely obstructive. The pursuit depends on concealment and on the enemy’s assumption that a route can be followed like an ordinary street. At Never Lane, Momo’s remembered knowledge of how to move through the place separates the travelers from the force behind them, and the gray men’s attempt to cross that boundary collapses into disappearance.
