Mulan Finds the Essence of Heavenly Majesty
MulanMulan Finds the Essence of Heavenly Majesty is the turning point in Mulan and Lu Ting-Pin’s search for the rare plant: a worn childhood toy supplies the clue that distinguishes the needed flower from another possible match. The discovery brings them to the right patch in the Garden of Splendors as the sun reaches the horizon, but success is not yet secured. When Mulan crouches to pick a blossom, bees rise around her and interrupt the gathering.
The Search and Its Deadline
Mulan and Lu Ting-Pin are searching the Garden of Splendors for a plant whose identity they do not yet know. Lu has inspected enough of the grounds to find two purple-flowered candidates: one with nine pointed petals, the other shaped like a horn with a star spreading from its center. The distinction matters because, as the Queen Mother of the West has instructed, they may pick only one item. Choosing incorrectly would jeopardize the purpose of their search.
Time is pressing. The Jade Rabbit had said that they must have the Essence of Heavenly Majesty by the night of the New Moon, and the sun is already nearing the horizon. Lu can move through the garden more quickly than Mulan, gliding along while she runs and carries the Jade Rabbit in a pouch. Their different speeds shape the search: he scouts and reports what he finds, while she must identify which plant fits the clue. The moment when those tasks converge comes not from a fresh observation of the garden, but from an object Mulan has carried for years.
The Toy Becomes a Clue
The Jade Rabbit stirs and pushes Xiu’s Stuffed Rabbit out of the carrier, offering it to Mulan. At first she is absorbed by the unexpected gesture and by the toy itself. Its worn silk is familiar from years of handling, but its original appearance has faded from her memory. Now she notices what remains: a flower and a white spider in the embroidery, traces of a design that once included a viper, spider, toad, centipede, and scorpion arranged around a floral pattern.
That design recalls the Jade Rabbit’s old medicine bag. Mulan remembers having smelled the bag when she was a child with a stuffy nose; its silk and embroidered pattern were like those of the toy. The connection transforms an object of childhood into evidence about the present quest. The flower embroidered on it is not merely decorative: its petals can be compared with the real plants Lu has found.
The recognition also opens a question about the toy’s earlier history. Mulan recalls that an old peasant woman gave it to her when she was young, and remembers the woman’s light amber eyes. Since the Jade Rabbit can change into different kinds of beings, Mulan considers whether he had once appeared as that woman and given her the toy knowing it would matter later. The scene raises this possibility rather than confirming it. What Mulan can establish is the material correspondence between the toy and the medicine bag, and the flower’s usefulness as a guide.
Identifying the Flower
When Mulan asks Lu to confirm that one candidate has nine petals, he nods. She counts the embroidered petals on Xiu’s Stuffed Rabbit: seven, eight, nine. The count links the remembered design to the plant Lu described and enables Mulan to identify the nine-petaled flower as the Essence of Heavenly Majesty. A clue preserved in an old toy resolves the uncertainty between the two candidates.
Lu takes Mulan by the wrist and leads her toward the plants. They race along the garden’s winding paths, over bridges, through courtyards, and past waterfalls. Mulan carries the Jade Rabbit on her back, tightening the pouch as they run. Lu’s advantage in moving quickly allows him to guide her through the grounds, while Mulan’s recognition determines which of the plants they need to reach.
They pass through a gourd-shaped doorway into an open courtyard beside a rippling lake. A golden pavilion stands nearby, but they hurry instead toward greenery beneath a cypress tree and beside two flowering bushes. As they arrive, lanterns light and silk moons appear in the air. The sun’s lower edge is touching the horizon, making the deadline visible in the scene rather than merely a remembered instruction. The flowers’ purple blooms, the design on the toy, and the clue of nine petals now converge. Mulan compares the embroidery with the flowers and confirms that these are the ones they sought.
Discovery Interrupted
Mulan’s relief at finding the plant is immediate, though she does not yet have the blossom. As she crouches to pick one, a bee flies out of a flower and toward her. She swats at it, and the bandages around her hands unwind. Another bee approaches; her attempts to avoid it throw her off balance, and she falls into a sitting position while trying not to crush the Jade Rabbit. More bees continue buzzing around her. Lu comes to help, and when he places a hand on her arm, the bees land on either side of them.
The event therefore ends at the threshold between identifying the remedy and obtaining it. Mulan and Lu have reached the correct flowers before the sun has fully set, and the toy has prevented a mistaken choice. Yet the gathering itself is interrupted, leaving the immediate practical task unresolved in this moment. The change is important: the search has moved from uncertainty about what to find to a specific encounter with the identified plant, where a new obstacle stands between recognition and use.
Narrative Significance
The scene makes memory operational. Mulan does not solve the problem through a new instruction from Lu or a direct explanation from the Jade Rabbit; she reads an old object whose design has survived even as its threads have worn away. The toy’s remaining flower becomes a pattern she can test against the living plants. Its age and damage do not erase its value: the surviving details are exactly enough to guide her choice.
The discovery also joins the quest’s past and present without resolving every mystery. Mulan’s recollection suggests that the Jade Rabbit may have crossed her path before she understood who he was, but the possibility remains a question. In contrast, the nine-petal identification is definite: she counts the petals, compares the flower, and names the correct plant. The scene balances uncertainty about the Jade Rabbit’s earlier identity with certainty about the remedy they need. Finding the Essence of Heavenly Majesty is thus both a concrete advance in the search and a moment when Mulan recognizes that the story of the journey may have begun earlier than she knew.
