Bilbao Airport (BIO) is the modest regional airfield serving the Basque city of Bilbao, Spain. In the hours following Edmond Kirsch's assassination at the Guggenheim Museum, the airport becomes the focal point of a desperate escape and a subsequent manhunt, transforming from a mundane transit hub into a stage for high-stakes evasion.

Role in the Escape from Bilbao

After fleeing the museum, Langdon and Ambra Vidal follow a cryptic clue left by Kirsch—a business card reading "BIO-EC346." Langdon deciphers the code: "BIO" is the airport code for Bilbao Airport, and "EC346" is the tail number of Kirsch's private Gulfstream G550 jet. Kirsch had intended for Langdon to present the card to a taxi driver, who would take him directly to the airport and the waiting plane. Instead, Winston, Kirsch's synthetic intelligence, arranges for a water taxi to take them partway, leaving them to walk the final three kilometers across a field to the airport's perimeter fence. The airport's security fence is breached when Winston instructs the jet's pilot, Captain Josh Siegel, to use the plane's nose cone to push over a fence post, creating an opening for Langdon and Ambra to board. The pilot then deceives air traffic control, claiming a warning light, while the jet taxis onto the runway and takes off for Barcelona.

The Pursuit

Later, the Guardia Real agents Fonseca and Díaz, acting on orders from the Royal Palace, are dispatched to Bilbao Airport. A military transport plane is fueled for them, and they fly to Barcelona's El Prat Airport in pursuit of Langdon and Ambra. The airport thus serves as the launch point for the official chase, underscoring the palace's determination to intercept the fugitives before they can release Kirsch's discovery.
