Tabini’s Hidden Flight After His Overthrow
PeacemakerTabini’s hidden flight after his overthrow turns survival into a political act: he and Damiri evade a coordinated coup, refuse a route that could endanger Lord Tatiseigi, and disappear for a year inside territory controlled by their enemies. Their return reveals that the conspirators had failed to find them, and gives the population proof that Tabini and his household are still alive.
The Coup and the Escape
The flight followed a conspiracy that moved against Tabini on several fronts. The plotters intended to kill him at his residence, but he was not there; they then strengthened their attack at Taiben, where they believed he might be. The attacks were coordinated with seizures of the shuttles, the Shejidan airport, the station at Mogari-nai, and a radio station, in an effort to control communication and access to the heavens.
Tabini and Damiri narrowly escaped from Taiben. Their bodyguards did not. The escape left the couple alive but without the protection their guards had provided, as the conspirators hunted for them and sought to prevent any route back to power.
A Route Through Enemy Territory
Rather than go to the neighboring Atageini estate and risk bringing Lord Tatiseigi into danger, Tabini and Damiri crossed Kadagidi territory. The choice carried them through land belonging to the very faction hunting them, instead of toward a nearby potential refuge that could have exposed an ally to the coup.
During the flight, Tabini relied on skills he had learned at Malguri to hunt and survive. The account presents the journey as a year without making contact with anyone: concealment depended not on reaching a safe political center, but on remaining beyond the conspirators’ knowledge and reach.
A Year in Hiding
The conspirators searched everywhere they could think of, but the Kadagidi’s own borders were the last place they expected Tabini to be. The couple’s absence thus became a strategic advantage: the search was extensive, yet it did not uncover the route they had taken.
The narrative does not detail the daily conditions of their concealment. It does establish its duration, its isolation, and the danger around it. Tabini and Damiri remained out of contact for a year while the regime pursued them, and their continued survival remained unknown to those who might otherwise have acted on their behalf.
Return and Political Consequences
When the aiji-dowager, Cajeiri, and Bren Cameron returned to the continent, they went to Lord Tatiseigi’s estate. Tabini and Damiri were not far away; after receiving word, they arrived at the estate as well. Their reappearance joined the hidden couple to the returning allies and made their survival visible.
News that Tabini and his household were alive, that the humans had kept their word, and that the station and Mospheira remained allied with them gave people courage to rise in support of Tabini and the aiji-dowager. The restoration of the aijinate was easier than repairing the damage Murini had caused, but the return of Tabini and Damiri was a crucial reversal: a ruler believed vulnerable or absent had survived inside enemy territory, and could once again become the center of public resistance.
