Mrs. Smith Reveals Mr. Elliot's Character

Anne visits Mrs. Smith, who finally reveals the truth about Mr. Elliot. She shows Anne a letter in which Mr. Elliot expresses contempt for Sir Walter and the family. Mrs. Smith explains that Mr. Elliot is a cold, calculating man who only seeks to marry Anne to secure his inheritance and prevent Sir Walter from marrying Mrs. Clay.
