Kately's gun

Piranesi

Ketterley’s gun is both a practical tool and the clearest sign that he has prepared to meet the Flood with violence. Found by Piranesi in the First Western Hall among Ketterley’s equipment, it confirms the ownership of a bag that also contains an inflatable boat. Ketterley’s use of the weapon against Piranesi and 16 turns the preparations for survival into an armed confrontation; when Piranesi kicks it away, the gun is separated from its owner, who is later killed by the Waters. Its disappearance leaves the House to reclaim what Ketterley brought into it.

Acquisition and Ownership

Ketterley tells Piranesi that he has managed to obtain a gun, although he admits that he is a dreadful shot and will need to practise. He presents the weapon as part of his preparations for ending what he calls the nightmare, while also arguing that allowing 16 to drive them mad is not an acceptable alternative to killing her. Piranesi pleads that they should not kill 16. The exchange makes the gun more than an item of equipment: it is the material counterpart of a plan that Piranesi rejects.

On the eve of the Flood, Piranesi finds a large grey fabric bag in the First Western Hall, near the Statues of the Horned Giants. The bag is about 80 centimetres long, 50 centimetres wide, and 40 centimetres deep. It has canvas handles and straps secured with metal buckles; two black canvas objects lie beside it. Inside, Piranesi finds the gun and folded heavy plastic, among other contents. After examining the plastic and related equipment, he recognizes that the material forms an inflatable boat about four metres long and one metre wide.

The boat’s arrival might have suggested that the House had provided a means of surviving the Flood. Piranesi dismisses that possibility because other Floods had passed without a boat appearing, and because he cannot imagine the House sending a gun. For him, the gun identifies the owner of the bag: it belongs to Ketterley. He considers carrying it down the Great Staircase in the First Vestibule and throwing it into the Tides, but instead returns it to the bag and closes the bag. He leaves the weapon where it is rather than disposing of it.

The Gun During the Flood

When Piranesi later approaches Ketterley in the First Western Hall, Ketterley is pumping air into the boat. The grey bag is empty, and the silver gun rests beside it on the pavement. Ketterley demands to know why Piranesi was absent when expected and says that he has changed his plans. He tells Piranesi that Raphael is coming and that they are going to finish matters, warning him not to interfere. The gun is thus immediately present as Ketterley prepares to act and presses Piranesi to comply.

As water begins to cross the pavement, Ketterley moves for the gun. Piranesi, who has positioned himself closer, kicks it away; it skitters across the marble and comes to rest near the Northern Wall, about fifteen metres away. The rising ripples seem to follow it. By removing the weapon from Ketterley’s reach, Piranesi temporarily interrupts the threat and asks instead where 16 is. The gesture also marks a reversal in their encounter: Ketterley’s preparations no longer give him straightforward control over events.

That reprieve does not last. From a high cornice, Piranesi and 16 see Ketterley run to the Northern Wall to retrieve the gun rather than get into his boat. He fires at them. One shot strikes a statue above their heads, and Piranesi is injured. Piranesi calls for Ketterley to get into the boat before it is too late, but Ketterley continues wading through the rising water. The weapon’s use shifts the scene from a struggle over plans and trust to an immediate threat to Piranesi and 16, while Ketterley abandons the safer course represented by the boat.

Loss and Aftermath

The Great Waves arrive before Ketterley can reach safety. A wave throws him against the Southern Wall and the statues; he disappears when the water draws back. The small inflatable boat remains on the water, repeatedly engulfed and resurfacing. Piranesi observes that it could have saved Ketterley had he managed to reach it. The weapon, by contrast, offers no protection from the Flood and has helped keep Ketterley in the dangerous position where he is struck by the Waters.

After the Flood, Piranesi finds Ketterley’s body in an angle of the staircase in the Eighth Vestibule. He handles the dead with care, laying Ketterley out and cradling his head, but cannot find the gun. He concludes that the Tides must have carried it deep within themselves. Later that morning, he finds Ketterley’s boat unharmed in the First Western Hall, where the water is now only ankle-deep. He addresses the boat with regret that it did not save Ketterley, but it appears lifeless without the rushing Waters that had animated it. The ending separates the two objects’ fates: the boat remains visible, while the gun vanishes into the Tides.

Narrative Significance

The gun’s movement through the Flood sequence gives it a precise narrative function. Ketterley first describes it as a new acquisition and admits he cannot shoot accurately; Piranesi then finds it and recognizes its owner; later Ketterley reaches for it, Piranesi kicks it away, and Ketterley retrieves it to fire at Piranesi and 16. These changes make the gun a recurring marker of the conflict between Ketterley’s attempt to impose a violent solution and Piranesi’s effort to prevent harm.

The contrast with the inflatable boat sharpens the weapon’s significance. Both objects arrive together as equipment for the Flood, but they offer opposing possibilities: the boat could carry Ketterley to safety, while the gun turns his attention toward attacking others. When the decisive danger comes, he chooses to recover the weapon instead of boarding the boat. The gun is ultimately lost, and Ketterley dies; the object that might have helped him survive remains behind, still afloat after the danger has passed.
