Quarter Moon
PiranesiQuarter Moon is a lunar phase that gives Piranesi’s flood warning a shared date marker. His calculations identify the Great Flood as beginning on its first day, translating the House’s complex tide cycle into a usable point in time.
Place in the House’s Timekeeping
The House has three levels, with the Lower Halls governed by the tides and providing food from the sea. Piranesi maintains a Table of Tides using observations and equations of his own invention; every few months, he checks for extraordinary events in the weeks ahead. The phases of the moon thus belong to a practical system of watching and preparation, not merely to the celestial setting beyond the House.
The Flood Forecast
After neglecting his tide calculations while occupied with other matters, Piranesi discovers a Conjunction of Four Tides due in less than a week. He recognizes that the event puts both himself and The Other in mortal danger and begins planning how to warn 16. The forecast makes the first day of Quarter Moon the expected day of the flood.
A Date for the Warning
Piranesi cannot assume that 16 uses his invented calendar, so a warning expressed only as a number of days might not tell her when to act. He adds a postscript identifying the current phase as the second day of New Moon and the flood date as the first day of Quarter Moon. The lunar sequence makes the warning intelligible without relying on a calendar the two may not share.
Consequence and Significance
At noon, as the final two tides rise and tempestuous waters fill the surrounding area, the flood forecast becomes an immediate physical danger. Quarter Moon stands at the far end of Piranesi’s short warning interval: it is at once a natural phase, a forecast date, and the clearest temporal reference he can send to 16. Its significance lies in how observation and calculation turn the House’s changing waters into advance warning.
