Elk's Lake

Pleasure

Elk's Lake is a remote region of Alaska where an ordinary-looking research station conceals access to the Shadowdwellers’ underground winter city. Its distance and deceptive surface make it both a wilderness setting and a guarded threshold between Valera’s solitary life and Sagan’s hidden community.

Remote Setting and Apparent Isolation

Valera identifies her home as being near the Elk's Lake region, deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Her nearest neighbor, as she understands it, is a research station at least a hundred miles away and at a much higher elevation. She has never seen the station; she knows only that it exists, and considers it too distant even to imagine visiting for a cup of flour. The distance reinforces the practical isolation of her surroundings, where the cold and snow shape ordinary tasks such as bringing in firewood.

The Concealed Winter City

The research station is more than a remote outpost: its outward appearance protects the secret enclave at Elk's Lake. It guards the entrance to exhausted mines transformed into the Shadowdwellers’ winter city, placing the hidden settlement beneath a landscape whose visible signs disclose little of what lies below. The station thus functions as both cover and checkpoint, and the city’s entrance is a controlled passage into a concealed community.

Sagan’s Return and the Location’s Role

Returning to Elk's Lake takes Sagan a long time because he lacks supplies and proper clothing and must find shelter from sunlight during Alaska’s short winter days. A storm leaves him without shelter, forcing him to cross into the Shadowscape for safety; after two days there, its effects can become dangerous, and the difference in time between it and the Realscape makes his arrival difficult to predict. When he finally reaches the station guarding the mines, the guards recognize his priest’s uniform and try to take him into a building for care. He refuses their assistance and continues directly into the city, stopping only near the Sanctuary.

Elk's Lake therefore joins two forms of remoteness: Valera’s visible, exposed wilderness and the Shadowdwellers’ concealed underground refuge. The contrast gives the location its narrative force. What Valera knows only as a distant station is the surface protection of a city whose existence Sagan cannot safely explain to her, while for Sagan the same approach marks the end of a physically punishing journey and the return to the community he has left.
