Multiple Planes of Existence

Pleasure

Multiple Planes of Existence is the cosmological model used to explain how Beneath relates to Earth: they occupy distinct levels within a universe of parallel planes, rather than separate places on a single world. Its revelation places Asia at the lowest plane below Earth and makes her unfamiliar surroundings a matter of both cosmic structure and immediate danger.

The Layered Cosmos

The explanation presents Earth as one plane, or dimension, within the universe. To make that structure imaginable, the speaker holds out a flat hand and describes Earth as a flat space extending in an infinite line on its own plane. Other planes lie above and below it, each running parallel to the adjacent plane. Earth is therefore not the whole of existence but one level in a larger arrangement.

There are three planes above Earth and three below it. The speaker indicates a plane far beneath the one represented by his hand as Beneath: the lowest plane below Earth. The model gives Asia a precise place in this hierarchy, even as its scale and arrangement challenge her ordinary understanding of the world.

Beneath, Heaven, and Hell

The account separates the planes surrounding Earth from the familiar human terms Heaven and Hell. Humans, the speaker says, have a sense of other planes but mistakenly refer to them by those names; Heaven and Hell are actually different dimensions, beyond the structure he is describing. The distinction prevents the seven-plane arrangement from being mistaken for a literal map of conventional religious afterlife concepts.

Calling Beneath both nearer and farther than Asia can comprehend underscores the limits of ordinary spatial intuition. The explanation offers a framework rather than claiming that the unfamiliar realm is simply another earthly location: it is a parallel level of existence, and Beneath lies below the plane she knows.

Practical Consequences

The model is not merely abstract. Because Asia is unfamiliar with Beneath and its nature, the speaker warns her not to leave the house without him at first; outside, he says, the place can be dangerous to someone who does not understand it. Her position at the lowest plane below Earth thus carries an immediate consequence: understanding the map does not yet make its terrain safe.
