« L’ego est la cage, l’âme est l’oiseau »

Satan

The expression « L’ego est la cage, l’âme est l’oiseau » gives concise form to a vision of spiritual release in which the self that confines a person must be broken open for the soul to rise. Loïc hears it as part of a voice’s address to him during a night marked by satanic fire, when he is caught between fear and sleep.

The Voice and Its Teaching

The voice tells Loïc that he has had to pass through many circles and spheres, to die and be reborn, while the shells of his ego are crushed and broken. It presents love as the cost of that transformation and the soul’s flight toward the divine as his ultimate destiny. The cage-and-bird image condenses this teaching: the ego is not the soul’s fullest identity, but the enclosure from which it must be freed.

Loïc’s Vision of Release

The words return to Loïc like an incantation, accompanied by an overwhelming joy. He understands that Satan’s stones cannot prevail against the collective force of human souls, which he imagines gathering after millennia of suffering and sweeping away the world’s evil. The passage thus places the expression within a moment of revelation: release from the ego is linked to a vision of spiritual solidarity and transcendence. After seeing a radiant being whose faces change into people from his life, Loïc falls into a deep sleep.
