Blackthorne's Erasmus

Shōgun

Blackthorne’s Erasmus is the ship Blackthorne imagines could overpower a Portuguese brig and the possession Toranaga invokes when negotiating with Ishido. In these brief references, the vessel carries more than military potential: it is bound to Blackthorne’s absent crew, his memories of home, and the political claim over its captain.

Capability and the Harbor

While being led away from the harbor, Blackthorne spots a small Portuguese brig flying a blue-and-white flag. He counts ten cannon on its main deck, with twenty-pounders at bow and stern, and judges that Blackthorne’s Erasmus could take it easily. The assessment gives the ship a clear place in his calculations: even under guard and separated from his crew, he measures the nearby vessels against his own.

Crew, Home, and Memory

The sight of the brig turns Blackthorne’s thoughts from naval comparison to the people he has left behind. He wonders what his crew are doing back in the village and remembers being glad to return to his own house, where Onna—Haku—was, at the home of Mura-san. His recollection wanders to a girl in his floor-bed and to the beautiful woman who had spoken with Omi-san, then to a dream in which she was in a cauldron. The ship is not present in this memory as a scene of action; instead, the thought of its crew draws Blackthorne back toward the domestic life and unresolved attachments he has left behind.

A Ship Claimed as Property

In a conversation with Ishido, Toranaga asserts ownership over Blackthorne and Blackthorne’s Erasmus, saying that Ishido may have the Englishman once Toranaga has finished with him. Ishido may then send Blackthorne to the execution ground. The exchange makes the ship part of the same political bargaining as its captain: Toranaga’s claim places both under his authority, while Ishido’s willingness to accept that claim underscores Blackthorne’s precarious position. The vessel thus stands between the freedom Blackthorne associates with command at sea and the control imposed on him ashore.
