Yoshitomo sword

Shōgun

The Yoshitomo sword passes from Toranaga to Yabu and then to Blackthorne, turning a valuable personal possession into a gesture of gratitude and recognition. Its brief history is defined not by its manufacture or use in combat, neither of which is described, but by the choices its owners make about whom to entrust with it.

Provenance

Toranaga had given the sword to Yabu. When Yabu decided to pass it on, he first removed the scabbarded blade from his sash and asked Buntaro to deliver it to Blackthorne. He reconsidered, however, and asked for Blackthorne to be summoned so that he could present the sword himself.

The Gift to Blackthorne

Yabu explained his gift through Tsukku-san, who interpreted for him. He described the sword as a commemoration of Blackthorne’s arrival at Anjiro and an expression of thanks for a personal pleasure Blackthorne had given him. Blackthorne initially declined the blade; Yabu urged him to accept, arguing that it deserved a recipient worthy of it. Blackthorne eventually agreed.

Ownership and Significance

The transfer changes the sword’s immediate place in the story: a gift Toranaga had entrusted to Yabu becomes Yabu’s own gift to Blackthorne. Toranaga later asks whether the sword is the Yoshitomo he had given Yabu, confirming its provenance and his awareness of the transfer. The blade thus carries two connected acts of giving: Toranaga’s earlier gift to Yabu and Yabu’s deliberate decision to honor Blackthorne with it.
