Escape from Prison

Shantaram

Escape from Prison is the daylight escape in which Lin and an unnamed friend cut their way through the prison roof and cross its exposed outer wall. Its decisive turn comes when Lin cannot bring himself to enter the guarded gate area for the Escape power cord: instead, he cuts the cord inside, then uses it as a rope. They reach the street, but the escape is only the beginning of a hunted life, and the fear that accompanies it follows Lin long after the prison is behind him.

The roof and the remaining obstacle

The plan depends on a route through the roof and a means of descending the prison’s outer wall. Lin and his friend have already cut an opening into one of the roof’s troughs. The narrow V-shaped channel gives them a blind spot: lying in its deepest part keeps them out of the tower guards’ view. But the route is not yet complete. The power cord remains plugged into an outlet downstairs, outside the building, and they need it as a rope. Retrieving it conventionally would require one of them to pass through a door in full view of guards in the adjoining gate area, unplug it, and climb back to the roof.

Lin initially recognizes that he must make this exposed trip himself. At the door, however, he cannot force himself into the open. His fear defeats the intended plan, and he accepts that he cannot make the crossing. The decision that follows is both practical and perilous: rather than retrieve the cord intact, he places a chisel against it where it passes beneath the door and cuts it. He knows that interrupting the power might trigger an alarm or bring a guard to investigate, but sees no workable alternative. No alarm or approaching voices follow. Lin takes the severed end and returns upstairs, turning a failed attempt to reach the outlet into a different way to complete the escape.

Crossing the roof

At the opening in the roof, the pair fasten the cord to a heavy wooden bearer beam. Lin’s friend goes first, but becomes stuck while climbing through the hole. In the darkness of the roof space, Lin finds a cigarette lighter and sees that his friend’s thick leather tobacco pouch, made in a prison hobby group, has caught against his coveralls. Lin tells him to hold still, then uses the chisel to tear open the pocket at the back of the coveralls. When the pouch falls free, his friend can move through the opening and onto the tin roof; Lin follows.

They crawl along the gutter-like trough towards the prison’s castellated front wall. The guards do not look towards that part of the building, not because it is actually beyond their reach but because they do not expect anyone to attempt a daylight escape over the front wall. The narrative makes this mistaken expectation part of the route: the wall is watched, yet for a short time the two escapees can move through a place the guards have mentally dismissed as impossible to use.

From the wall they see a queue of vehicles outside the main gate. Delivery vehicles move slowly because each is searched and checked with mirrors underneath. The queue makes the street below a dangerous place to land. Lin’s friend wants to go straight through the people and vehicles, but Lin refuses that immediate risk. He decides they must wait until the street is empty. For twenty minutes, he repeatedly edges forward to look over the wall, each glance risking discovery. At last he sees no vehicles or people in either direction and signals his friend to go.

The descent and its cost

Lin’s friend climbs over the parapet and disappears from view. Lin expects to see him descending the cord, then realizes that his friend is already on the street and has crossed into a narrow lane opposite the prison. Lin remains alone on the roof, with the exposed descent still to make. He climbs over the bluestone parapet and takes hold of the cord while the guards remain in their towers. One is speaking on a telephone; another is calling down to a guard in the gate area. Both are armed, but neither notices Lin on the wall.

Lin pushes away from the wall to descend, loses his grip, and falls. He manages to catch the cord and slow himself enough to reach the ground. The escape turns at that moment from a plan carried out under cover into a desperate physical crossing; when Lin staggers across the road, he is free. The power cord still hangs over the wall. The guards continue their conversations, and a passing driver drums along to a song. The ordinary street life contrasts with the prison’s watchtowers and the risk Lin has just survived.

He looks back only once, then turns away and walks into a life on the run. The freedom won at the wall comes with a lasting personal cost: Lin describes the life that follows as one that takes everything he has loved. His later account connects this fear to his earlier armed robberies. Having once frightened other people through his crimes, he now experiences fear as a persistent consequence, extending through imprisonment and his fugitive life.

Aftermath and narrative significance

The prison escape is therefore both a successful action and the start of a continuing ordeal. In the early months in Bombay, Lin fills his days with duties, needs, and small pleasures, but nights bring back the prison in memory. He walks while the slum sleeps, trying not to look over his shoulder at the gun towers and the cord that is no longer there. The image of the dangling cord survives the escape as a recurring reminder: the instrument that carried him out also marks the threshold into an insecure life beyond the wall.

The episode is shaped by reversals between apparent control and vulnerability. Lin and his friend find a blind spot, but their crossing still depends on a cord they cannot safely retrieve by the intended route; Lin cuts it, but his friend is briefly trapped in the roof opening; they reach the outer wall, but a queue below forces them to wait; the guards appear occupied, yet Lin loses his grip during the descent. The escape succeeds through adaptation and restraint rather than a direct confrontation with the prison staff. Its ending does not equate escape with an end to fear: Lin leaves the prison, but carries its remembered towers into the nights that follow.
