Khader fakes his death and leaves his family
ShantaramAbdel Khader Khan fakes his death and leaves his family to break a blood feud that had consumed both families. His departure helps bring the killings to an end, but the peace comes at the cost of his place in his own family: bound by an oath to his mother, he cannot return home.
The feud and its cost
As Abdel Khader Khan recounts it, the feud began with killings and an attempt on his own life. Retaliation passed between the families in an alternating toll: first one death on his side and two on the other, then two on his side and one on theirs. His father repeatedly tried to find a way to end the conflict, but the violence continued for years.
Abdel Khader Khan had tried to leave because he believed he was the cause of the feud. His father would not let him go, and he felt unable to oppose him. In time, he lost his two brothers and both of his father’s brothers. The family conflict had become a cycle that outlasted individual losses and drew more men into its violence.
The false report and departure
The decisive opportunity came when his father was badly wounded in an attack and could no longer stop him. Abdel Khader Khan then told his family to spread a rumor that he had been killed, and he left the family home. The false report made his departure possible without presenting it as an open break with the family while the feud was still active.
His action was not simply an escape from danger: it was an attempt to remove himself from the cycle he believed he had set in motion. The account links that decision to the end of the feud, though it does not say that the rumor alone resolved the conflict or identify precisely when peace followed.
Peace without return
Some time after Abdel Khader Khan left, the feud ended and peace was restored between the two families. Yet the reconciliation between the families did not restore his own family bond. He had sworn to his mother that he would never return, and that oath remained binding after the danger had passed.
The result is a sharp contrast between public peace and private estrangement: the families could cease their killings, while Abdel Khader Khan remained dead to his own. His departure thus ended one inheritance of violence without allowing him to resume the family life he had left behind.
