Habib's Murder of Siddiqi
ShantaramHabib Abdur Rahman’s murder of Siddiqi turns a supply camp into a scene of betrayal and uncertainty: while the others are occupied with incoming cargo, Habib kills a helpless man, confronts the horrified witnesses, and vanishes before they can seize him. The episode exposes violence within Abdel Khader Khan’s own party and leaves the immediate question of Habib’s whereabouts unresolved.
The camp and the concealed killing
The killing takes place after Lin has reached the camp following a difficult month-long journey through the mountains. The camp is still occupied with practical work: wounded men are sheltered beneath a camouflage canvas awning, while others unload cargo from horses and carry it into a cavern. Amid this activity, Lin notices Habib moving something long and heavy away from the working line and toward the darkness. The detail first registers as an unexplained action, not yet as evidence of a crime.
Lin asks Khaled what Habib is doing. Khaled’s immediate alertness turns the question into action: both men hurry toward the rocks at the edge of the flattened plateau. They find Habib beside Siddiqi, who had been unconscious beneath the awning. Habib has dragged him away from the shelter and killed him while the camp’s attention was fixed on the cargo. The movement from collective work to a secluded killing makes the setting consequential: the camp is busy, but that busyness has left Siddiqi exposed and allowed the act to go unseen until Lin happens to look over.
Witnesses and Habib’s disappearance
Lin and Khaled arrive as the killing is complete. Habib turns toward them, and their horror and anger meet his manic expression. Khaled calls for Abdel Khader Khan and Iddarao, summoning help rather than approaching Habib alone. Lin, meanwhile, watches Habib and draws his gun, following the weapon-handling instructions he has previously received from Abdel Khader Khan. He prepares to defend himself if Habib moves toward him, but the confrontation does not become a further attack.
Before Abdel Khader Khan, Nazeer, and Ahmed Zadeh reach the pair, Habib disappears. A sound behind Lin and Khaled makes them turn; when they look back, Habib is gone. Lin suspects that he may have descended into the ravine, but Khaled doubts that he could have jumped from a height of roughly fifty yards. The group therefore has no confirmed explanation for his escape. Habib’s departure is not a resolution of the killing, but a second rupture: the perpetrator has vanished, and the witnesses cannot say where he went.
Immediate response and unresolved danger
Khaled reports what he and Lin saw, identifying Habib as the killer and explaining that Siddiqi had been dragged from beneath the awning. Nazeer asks where Habib is, but neither witness knows. Their account establishes the murder clearly while leaving the search unresolved; the group has to act on what it knows without knowing whether Habib is still close by.
Abdel Khader Khan kneels beside Siddiqi and prays with his palms raised. His response gives the scene a moment of mourning amid the confusion, while Ahmed Zadeh urges the others to continue the work that remains before the moonlight is gone. He proposes looking for Habib the next day and allows that the man’s disappearance might not be the worst possible outcome. Khaled does not treat the uncertainty as safety: he orders guards to watch for Habib through the night, specifically choosing men from their own group who know him well rather than men from the local camp.
The episode thus closes without a capture, explanation, or settled account of Habib’s fate. It leaves Siddiqi dead, Habib missing, and the camp’s immediate priorities divided between its unfinished work and the need to guard against a man who has killed within the group. By placing the murder amid routine supply operations and ending on a watch order, the narrative makes the danger persist beyond the act itself.
