Spontaneous

Brett Newman is the technical specialist in Duan Jeffries’s investigative team, where computer expertise serves a practical purpose: converting scattered information into leads investigators can pursue. His clearest contribution comes in the renewed inquiry into Mandy Villarosas’s disappearance. Brett’s image-search network enables the team to identify a man believed to have been connected to Mandy, while the investigation’s later steps make clear that identification is a lead—not, by itself, proof of Edward Villarosas’s guilt.

Identity and Professional Background

Brett is one of four investigators who work with Duan at the Peachtree Private Investigative Firm. He previously worked with Duan as a police officer in Atlanta. The men began at the police academy together and eventually became detectives; Duan was the first to leave the force and establish a private firm. Landon Chestnut followed, and Brett and Chevis Fleming joined as partners within another year. Antron Blair came to the firm after an undercover operation in his work as an FBI agent nearly cost him his life.

The investigators handle individual cases but bring distinct specialties to their shared work. Duan is analytical and skilled at interpreting investigative reports. Landon is particularly effective at finding missing persons, Chevis at interrogations, and Antron at undercover work, with valuable Federal Bureau of Investigation contacts. Brett is the group’s computer-savvy technical expert. This division of labor makes his role different from the investigators who interview witnesses or follow leads in person: his contribution is to build and use systems that can search for information beyond the team’s immediate reach.

Technical Methods and Capabilities

Brett has developed a high-tech network that can distribute a scanned photograph across his databases and to law-enforcement agencies around the country, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The system also has age-enhancement capability, allowing the investigators to work from an image of a person as he appeared years earlier and search for an updated likeness. Duan says the network has already produced successes, and expects it to help identify a man despite the passage of a decade.

The technology does not replace ordinary investigative work. It depends on the team obtaining a useful image and asking a focused question of the system. In this case, investigators are contacting people who attended a reunion because photographs taken there might show the man Mandy supposedly flirted with. Women who had traveled with Mandy believed he was the same man she planned to meet on the day she disappeared. Brett’s network offers a way to turn that possible connection into a name the team can investigate.

Role in the Villarosas Investigation

Brett’s work takes place against the background of a case that had frustrated investigators for years. Edward Villarosas’s two wives disappeared five years apart, but earlier investigations found no solid connection between him and either disappearance. He had ironclad alibis, and at the time the women disappeared he and his wives were not even in the same cities. Villarosas maintained that the women had left him for other men. The lack of bodies and sufficient evidence meant the cases remained missing-person investigations rather than homicides.

The old photograph changes the investigators’ immediate task. They do not begin with a confirmed identity; they have a possible image of a man who may have met Mandy and may be relevant to her disappearance. Brett is expected to run that image through his network, including its age-enhancement process, and Duan gives him less than forty-eight hours to find the man’s identity. The speed of that proposed search contrasts with the decade that has elapsed since the photograph was made, while the need to identify the man reflects how much remains unknown about Mandy’s last movements.

The search produces a name: Stein Green. Green is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in a Florida prison for an armed robbery involving the death of a police officer. Chevis travels to Florida to question him. In a later development, after Chevis’s intense interrogation, Green admits that Edward hired him to get rid of both of his wives, claiming they were unfaithful. Brett’s identification therefore provides a route to a crucial witness, but the confession comes through Chevis’s questioning; the account distinguishes the technical lead from the investigative work that elicits the admission.

Narrative Function and Significance

Brett is characterized through his specialized competence and his place in a coordinated team, rather than through a separately described personal history. Duan treats his computer abilities as unusually versatile, and the image network gives those abilities a concrete function in a cold investigation: it helps move the inquiry from an uncertain face toward a person investigators can locate and question.

That progression also preserves an important distinction in the case. Suspicion of Villarosas had persisted despite failed investigations, and Duan insists that a suspect must be treated as innocent until proven guilty. A photograph, an identification, and a later confession each occupy a different place in the chain of inquiry. Brett helps establish the identity that makes the next step possible; his contribution is consequential precisely because it advances the investigation without being presented as a substitute for corroboration or proof.
