Galahad tests the eastern seal

Tide

Galahad Stormcrane’s test of the Eastern Seal turns an unseen protection beneath the sea into a visible, temporary circle of green fire. On a wave-struck shore, he calls up a force that runs across the ocean floor, studies the boundary it reveals, and ends the spell once the seal’s unbroken condition has been confirmed. The result is reassuring but deliberately provisional: the seal is holding, for now.

The Night Ride and the Shore

Galahad reaches the sea after riding out beneath cold, silvery moonlight. Scraw catches up after roosting on the chimney, while Thondorfax carries Galahad at a gallop. Their route takes them down toward Megipesk, the town where Galahad first came ashore. They pass its shuttered houses, dark square, and silent fountain as the sound of the sea rises ahead. At the water’s edge, the town gives way to moonlit surf breaking around black rocks.

The approach ends beneath the cliffs on which Perlkastel stands. The beach narrows, and Thondorfax splashes through the incoming waves until Galahad brings him to a halt and dismounts. Galahad leaves the reins, climbs a high pile of jagged, barnacle-covered rocks, and faces the channel. Wind swirls around him; waves break below and cold droplets strike his face. This exposed position is not merely a view over the sea: it is the point from which he directs the test into its depths.

Before beginning, Galahad removes his gloves, tucks them into his belt, and narrows his eyes at the dark water. He presses his bare hands together and draws a deep breath, then shuts his eyes. The deliberate preparation gives the action a concentrated, almost ritual shape: the test begins with controlled stillness, in contrast to the violent wind and surf around him.

A Spell Across the Seabed

The force first registers in Galahad’s body. Heat builds in his chest, throbs with storm-like force, and spreads around his muscles toward his fingertips. After another deep breath, he opens his eyes, moves his shoulders, and flings out his right hand. A great blast issues from his palm; his cape lashes behind him, and an unearthly wind tears at his hair. The spell is thus presented as something he actively summons and directs, but also as a power whose scale is apparent in its effects on him and the surrounding air.

Green fire ignites beneath the waves. It lights the depths and sends a straight line of brilliance from the base of Galahad’s rock out across the ocean floor, burning through the darkness as fish flee in every direction. At the center of the channel, the line reaches an unseen barrier and divides. Its two branches race away from each other in a broad arc, then meet again to complete a vast circle on the seabed.

The circle makes the otherwise hidden boundary legible. Its shape is not described as a crack or breach: it is an outline produced by the test, extending from Galahad’s position across the channel. He now holds out both hands and beckons with his fingers, breathing in the strange scent raised by the spell. The narration isolates that scent as jasmine. The sensory detail accompanies the magical display without explaining its precise meaning; the clearest evidence of the seal’s condition comes in the inspection that follows.

The Inspection and Its Result

The green circle flickers and flares in time with Galahad’s heartbeat, while steam rises from the restless waves. Although the display pulses, its edges remain strong and bright, and no fissures appear in them. The contrast matters: the surface is visibly unsettled, the light is changing, and yet the boundary itself shows no break. The test’s result is conveyed through what Galahad can observe rather than through a spoken explanation of the seal’s workings.

Galahad lowers his left hand and turns his right palm upward, spreading his fingers. A gentle heat touches his palm and rests there. He nods slowly, then claps; the sound carries over the water. As if hauling a rope, he grasps an invisible strand of magic and jerks it. The gesture ends the display: the circle breaks, the line of fire bursts into sizzling smoke, and the green light disappears. Darkness returns, leaving the wary glow of the moon over the water.

Only after dismissing the spell does Galahad let out a long, cautious sigh. The narration gives his conclusion in brief, measured terms: the seal is holding, but only for now. The confidence of the inspection is therefore qualified by its limited scope. The circle has shown no fissures, and Galahad has received the sign of warmth in his palm, yet the wording does not promise lasting security or claim that all danger has passed.

Narrative Function and Stakes

The test turns a question about an unseen magical protection into a sequence of observable signs: the green path, its division and reunion, the intact circumference, and the warmth in Galahad’s hand. Its visual scale contrasts with the restrained conclusion. A vast circle burns across the ocean floor, but the verdict is not a triumphal declaration; it is a careful assessment that the seal remains sound at this moment.

The scene also balances command with exposure. Galahad directs the fire and finally cuts it off, yet he performs the examination among jagged rocks, wind, and waves, with the sea’s darkness surrounding the light he has made. The spell reveals enough to answer the immediate question without making the protection permanent or fully understood. After the test, the narrative moves to the following day, when Galahad rises before dawn, cleans Thondorfax’s stall, and rides to the palace to breakfast with Prince James. The transition returns him from solitary work at the channel to the court, while leaving the seal’s future condition unresolved.
