Dean
VenomDean is one of Lucian’s best friends at Dragonia Academy, and his connection with Sammy moves from a quietly observed attraction to a confirmed kiss. Though the narrative offers only brief glimpses of him, those moments place him at the center of Sammy’s emerging romantic story and connect their outing to a separate encounter involving Blake Leaf and Arianna Kinsley.
Introduction and Changing Appearance
When Elena notices Dean at a gathering, he is speaking with two men in a far corner. Sammy’s posture changes as soon as she sees him: she sits straighter, watches him, and smiles before lowering her gaze when she catches Elena looking. Elena suspects their shared experience guarding Dragonia a couple of months earlier may account for Sammy’s reaction, but Sammy has never discussed it with her.
Dean’s appearance also draws attention. Becky remarks that he has blossomed over the summer, recalling that she, Elena, and George had encountered him two weeks earlier and all gaped at the change. George asks whether Dean has finally undergone Ascending, but the exchange does not confirm that he has.
Relationship with Sammy
Sammy’s interest is apparent before she names it. When Elena gently nudges her and asks whether she likes Dean, Becky breaks off kissing George to ask who they mean; Elena and Sammy’s shared look, followed by their laughter, makes the answer clear. The teasing gives way to a more substantial development when Sammy later tells Elena that Dean kissed her. She recounts it with the lingering delight of someone still on cloud nine, and Elena smiles as she listens.
Sammy describes Dean as having turned into her knight in shining armor, presenting the kiss as part of a romantic encounter rather than an isolated gesture. The evidence does not explain exactly what Dean did to earn that description, but Sammy’s glowing account establishes the importance she attaches to his attention.
Longbottoms and Narrative Role
Dean and Sammy go for drinks at Longbottoms. During the outing, they see Arianna and Blake kissing intensely in one of the corner booths. Sammy’s account links Dean’s developing romance with a glimpse of Blake’s complicated involvement with Tabitha: she suggests Tabitha may have been absent after another fight or may have passed out, and says Blake hooks up with Arianna when Tabitha is unavailable or when he wants to punish her. The account does not specify Dean’s response to the encounter.
Dean is therefore introduced less through extended independent action than through the changes his presence prompts in Sammy and the events they witness together. Their shared history guarding Dragonia supplies a possible background to her attraction, while the kiss and drinks at Longbottoms turn that unspoken interest into an active romance. The scene also places their private connection alongside the more troubled relationship between Blake and Tabitha, without suggesting that Dean’s own relationship with Sammy shares that pattern.
