Lucian

Venom

Lucian’s relationship with Elena is caught between private devotion and public arrangement: while he repeatedly tries to contact her, she is troubled by the knowledge that he is expected to marry Arianna Kinsley, Princess of Areeth. Their separation is not simply a failure to communicate; it reflects pressure from Lucian’s parents and a dynastic pact neither young person appears to have chosen.

Identity and Circumstances

Lucian is Elena’s partner in a relationship she describes as indispensable to her: she cannot imagine her life without him. Yet they have difficulty finding time together during the summer. His parents have not approved of their relationship, and their disapproval makes it difficult for the couple to be together.

Their contact is constrained as well as their visits. On an impromptu two-week family vacation near the Wall, Lucian is unable to be with Elena on her seventeenth birthday. The place has poor phone reception, so even talking by phone is not a workable alternative. Elena reflects that, even in a magical world, they remain dependent on cell phone towers.

The Betrothal Threat

The central strain in Lucian and Elena’s relationship is the future Elena has recently learned about: in two years, when Lucian graduates from Dragonia Academy, he will be required to marry Arianna Kinsley, the Princess of Areeth. Elena regards Arianna with intense dislike, but the larger obstacle is the political arrangement behind the match.

The marriage plan stems from a pact made when the Prince and Princess were children by the two ruling kings of Paegeia. Its stated purpose was to unite the kingdom once again under one ruling family. That political ambition places Lucian’s future inside an agreement made by others, in direct conflict with the relationship Elena says she cannot bear to lose. The evidence does not establish how Lucian himself regards the pact; its immediate emotional burden is shown through Elena’s knowledge of it and her uncertainty about their future.

Attempts to Reconnect

After the couple returned from their mission to find the King of Lions sword, Lucian’s messages continued to reach Elena. The mission had ended a month and a half earlier, but his parents’ opposition and the summer’s limited opportunities to meet remained unresolved. Elena listens again to a message in which he pleads for her attention. She notices that he sounds frustrated and sighs more than usual, while wishing she knew what would happen to them.

Later, at a crowded gathering, her Cammy buzzes in her jacket pocket. Recognizing that Lucian is the person calling, Elena decides she is done ignoring him, pushes through the crowd, and goes to the end of the verandah for privacy. When his face appears, he first looks miserable, then brightens at seeing her. He teases her about having stopped ignoring him and asks whether she is enjoying herself without him.

Elena answers that she is not, explaining that George has returned and she was forced to come along. She asks about Lucian’s trip and jokes about whether he has killed a helpless deer. Lucian objects to her description of hunting: he says the deer are not drugged and are not helpless. Their exchange briefly restores the easy teasing between them, contrasting with the frustration and distance carried by his earlier messages.

Relationship and Uncertainty

Lucian’s pursuit of contact and Elena’s eventual decision to answer show that silence has not erased their attachment. At the same time, the call does not resolve the larger problem: Lucian’s parents still oppose the relationship, the couple has struggled to spend time together, and the arranged marriage remains a threat in two years. Elena’s wish to know what the future holds gives their reunion a temporary warmth without promising that the political obstacle has changed.
