He is described as a slim, elegant figure with red hair, often seen in a gray Sardaukar uniform with silver and gold trim, and a Burseg's ebon helmet with the Imperial crest in gold. His thin face and cold eyes are noted to resemble the late Duke Leto, a predatory bird-like quality. Shaddam had five daughters (Irulan, Chalice, Wensicia, Josifa, and Rugi) and no legal sons, a fact that weighs heavily on his reign. His wife, Anirul, a Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank, died in 10,176. The Emperor secretly provided Sardaukar troops disguised in Harkonnen livery to support the Baron's attack. The Emperor, however, is more concerned with the Fremen threat and the mysterious Muad'Dib. During this audience, Alia Atreides, Paul's sister, is brought in as a captive. She boldly confronts the Baron, calling him "Grandfather" and revealing her identity. In a shocking turn, Alia kills the Baron with a poisoned needle, the gom jabbar, as he attempts to restrain her.
