Escape into the Desert Betrayal Dr. Wellington Yueh drugs the Duke and delivers him to the Harkonnens, then helps Paul and Jessica escape in a desert ornithopter. Duncan Idaho sacrifices himself to buy them time. Storm Flight Paul pilots the damaged craft into a massive Coriolis storm, trusting the storm to erase their trail. The storm nearly kills them but carries them beyond Harkonnen pursuit. New World Paul and Jessica emerge into the deep desert with a Fremkit and the ducal signet, beginning their life as fugitives and setting Paul on the path to Muad'Dib.

Accepted by the Fremen Encounter Paul and Jessica are captured by Stilgar's Fremen troop at Tuono Basin. Jessica's Bene Gesserit combat skills shock the Fremen and gain them a temporary reprieve. Challenge Jamis invokes the tahaddi challenge, forcing Paul into a knife duel. Paul overcomes his shield-trained hesitation and kills Jamis, proving his fighting ability. Naming Stilgar gives Paul the troop name Usul and the open name Muad'Dib. Paul realizes he has entered a culture where his legend already has begun.

Sandrider and Commander Training Paul learns Fremen survival, rides the Sandworm for the first time, and becomes a full sandrider. The act is a rite of passage that makes him spiritually Fremen. He agrees to marry Princess Irulan while keeping Chani as his beloved. New Emperor Paul ascends as the power behind the throne, even as the jihad he feared prepares to sweep the universe.
