Jonathan Ferris
Jonathan Ferris is a senior field operative for the Consortium, the shadowy organization run by the provost. He is the man who first appears to Robert Langdon as Dr. Marconi, the bearded Italian physician in the staged hospital room, and later reappears as a WHO doctor named Jonathan Ferris who claims to have recruited Langdon in Cambridge. His ability to play two entirely different characters in a single day demonstrates the Consortium's reliance on theatrical deception to control its targets.
Identity and Role
Ferris's primary function is to maintain the illusion that Langdon is being hunted by hostile forces while secretly steering him toward the Consortium's goal of recovering the projector. As Dr. Marconi, he is the first person Langdon sees upon waking, a gentle-faced man with a shaggy beard and bushy mustache who speaks only Italian and appears to be a legitimate physician. In this role, Ferris is "shot" by Vayentha using a blank round and a radio-controlled squib, collapsing to the floor with a blood pack detonating on his chest. The squib malfunctions, breaking a rib and leaving a large bruise that causes him pain throughout the day. Later, as Jonathan Ferris, he wears a paisley necktie and Plume Paris spectacles, his face covered in a rash caused by an allergic reaction to the latex spirit gum used to attach his fake beard and eyebrows.
Arc Through the Plot
Ferris's trajectory follows the Consortium's shifting strategy. He first appears as the dying Dr. Marconi, then vanishes until he confronts Langdon and Sienna in the Baptistry of San Giovanni, where he claims to be a WHO doctor who recruited Langdon in Cambridge. He facilitates their escape from Florence by train to Venice, all while secretly reporting their position to the provost. When the provost views Zobrist's video and realizes the true nature of the threat, Ferris receives a phone call on the train that changes his allegiance. He steps into the restroom, removes his phone's battery, and returns to Langdon and Sienna with a dead battery excuse, now knowing that his former allies have become his enemies. In St. Mark's Basilica, Sienna attacks him with a dim mak strike to the chest, exploiting his existing injury to incapacitate him as the SRS team arrives.
Relationships and Conflict
Ferris's relationship with Sienna is one of mutual deception. She initially believes he is a WHO doctor, but she grows suspicious when he lags behind on the walk to St. Mark's and she catches him secretly using his phone after claiming the battery was dead. Her distrust culminates in her attacking him at the basilica, driving the heel of her hand into his bruised chest. With Langdon, Ferris maintains a facade of professional concern, advising him not to try to recall his lost memories and dismissing Langdon's suspicion that his rash might be the plague. The provost is Ferris's true employer, and their relationship is revealed when Ferris takes the provost's call on the train, learning that the Consortium has switched sides.
Change and Ending
Ferris's physical condition deteriorates throughout the day. The squib's misfire leaves him with a large bluish-black bruise on his chest that makes breathing difficult, and the allergic reaction to the latex cement causes his face, neck, and fingertips to swell and crack. By the time he collapses in St. Mark's Basilica, he is barely able to speak. After the SRS team brings him to The Mendacium, he is bandaged and flown to Istanbul, where he and the provost are arrested by Turkish police acting on Sinskey's orders. The provost's local agents stage a fake arrest to extract them, but the real police surround their escape van, and Ferris is taken into custody.

Ferris embodies the Consortium's principle that reality can be manufactured. His dual performance as Dr. Marconi and Jonathan Ferris demonstrates the organization's ability to create convincing illusions using actors, props, and staged events. His physical suffering from the squib and the allergic reaction serves as a counterpoint to the seamless deceptions the Consortium usually achieves, revealing that even the best illusions have material consequences. His eventual arrest marks the collapse of the Consortium's control over the situation, as the provost's carefully constructed web of lies unravels in the face of Zobrist's actual threat.
