Gluckgluck

Auerhaus

Gluckgluck is Harry’s large American car, a vehicle that first carries the group through the night and then becomes the centerpiece of a police confrontation. Its open passenger window, roof-mounted spotlight, and striking silhouette make it visible in the official account of the incident; around it, the difference between play and apparent danger collapses into an arrest.

The Car in Motion

When Harry returns, he parks Gluckgluck outside the house. The car’s arrival gives the group a way to move through the night together: they lie back in its upholstered seats as it seems to float along. The image is relaxed and almost weightless, but the car is also a practical shared space, enclosing the friends as they talk and act out scenes.

Inside, Frieder rummages around in the enormous glove compartment. Harry sharply tells him to leave it alone. The compartment is described as roughly the size of an ordinary car’s trunk, an exaggeration that makes Gluckgluck feel outsized even in its interior. The command suggests a boundary around what is kept in the car, although the passage does not disclose what Frieder is reaching for or why Harry stops him.

A Distinctive American Silhouette

Gluckgluck’s American design is unmistakable to the narrator’s mother when she reads the police account aloud. The report identifies it as an unusual car of American construction, and she recognizes that description as referring to Gluckgluck. The vehicle is not merely transport in the scene: its conspicuous shape lets the official narrative pick it out amid the traffic and turns the group’s private car into public evidence.

The car’s equipment intensifies that visibility. A spotlight mounted on its roof can turn along both its lengthwise and crosswise axes. At the traffic light, the police driver looks over and sees a weapon aimed from Gluckgluck’s open passenger window; at the same moment, the roof light blinds him. The account presents the car as a coordinated threat, joining the apparent weapon and dazzling beam in a single alarming image.

From Play to Police Pursuit

The group’s ride is also framed through performance. As they travel, Frieder recites lines about a woman coming home and wanting to cut her bread, and Vera supplies the image of bread like stones and a knife red with blood. The passage calls these lines the film’s motto, while shrill, deliberately screeching violin music accompanies the imagined scene. Against that theatrical backdrop, the car’s open window and spotlight make the next action look like a real attack rather than a game.

When the light changes from red to yellow, Harry accelerates straight ahead toward Gebingen. Pauline urges him to shoot; Frieder turns, tells the others to duck, aims backward through the rear window over their heads, and shouts as though firing. The official account describes the police response in grave terms, including warning shots and a pursuit. The comic, performed gunfire and the report’s language of danger occupy the same episode, but the consequences are no longer theatrical.

Arrest and Aftermath

The pursuit ends with Gluckgluck stopped at a red light, where police block the car and temporarily arrest its five young occupants. In the immediate aftermath, the group stands around the car with their hands on its roof as blue lights fill the scene. Officers search them while others stand with legs apart and weapons aimed at their heads. The car, previously a shelter and means of shared movement, is now the center of an armed police operation.

Harry later recounts a separate part of the aftermath: after reaching a factory gate, he walked directly into the arms of police officers. Following a brief exchange and an identity-card check, he was arrested, taken to the station for photographs and fingerprints, and then released. This account gives the arrest a further administrative consequence beyond the roadside confrontation. Gluckgluck links the friends’ movement through the night to the authorities’ pursuit and identification of them, while its conspicuous features help fix their game in the official record as a police incident.
