Searching for the Missing Axe
AuerhausSearching for the Missing Axe is a brief, unresolved episode in which Vera and the narrator return to Auerhaus and look through the house for the missing axe. The search brings the object’s practical absence into contact with Frieder’s death: the narrator imagines taking the axe to Berlin or placing it in Frieder’s coffin, but neither possibility can be acted on because the axe is nowhere to be found.
The Question of the Axe
Vera draws the narrator’s hand beneath the table, then gets up and leaves; the narrator follows, with Harry behind them. At the fire station, Vera looks at the two men as though they might work out what she has in mind. The narrator signals that it is time to act, and Vera finally asks where the axe is. The delayed question turns a private unease into a shared task: they must go back into the house and find the object.
The house is not secured as it once was. Its front door is unlocked, and the bolt has been missing since the search of the premises. That detail makes the return feel exposed, while also establishing that the group’s ability to protect or control the house has already been diminished. The missing axe is not an abstract puzzle; it is an object whose location has become uncertain in a home already marked by intrusion.
Searching the House
Harry refuses to go inside. Vera and the narrator search without him, moving through the stall, the hayloft, and the cellar. In a clay pit they find two partly decayed toads, an incidental discovery that marks the search as a physical passage through neglected spaces rather than a direct, purposeful route to the axe.
They climb upstairs, where the narrator notices for the first time how deeply worn the staircase is. Its wooden hollows have been polished smooth like stream stones. The worn steps register the house’s long use in material form: the search passes through a familiar domestic interior whose signs of habitation have been there all along, though the narrator has not noticed them before.
They continue through the cupboards, under the sloping ceilings, and behind the bathtub. At last they consider searching the windowless room they call the darkroom. The narrator tries the light switch, but nothing happens. Vera explains that the room had been the children’s room before the new farmstead was built. What seems like an inexplicable, dark space is therefore also a remnant of an earlier domestic arrangement, its original use recoverable only through Vera’s memory.
Frieder’s Grave and the Unresolved End
As they look, the narrator considers what they would do with the axe if they found it. He wonders whether to take it to Berlin or to put it in Frieder’s grave. The thought immediately becomes more specific: laying it on the coffin lid would be useless; it would have to be inside the coffin, where it could smash the coffin apart. The axe is thus connected both to leaving and to an impossible imagined intervention in Frieder’s burial. The narrator offers no solution, and the search itself does not turn into a plan.
Vera and the narrator leave Auerhaus without the axe. The failure closes the episode without explaining who moved it or where it is. The object remains missing, and the questions attached to it remain unresolved. In that unfinished ending, the house search becomes more than recovery of lost property: it brings the survivors back into the spaces of Auerhaus, into the changed condition of the house after the search, and into the continuing presence of Frieder’s death.
