Mayara is murdered

Barkskins

Mayara is murdered after accompanying a foreign journalist to document destructive logging in a protected sanctuary. Sapatisia’s later recollection makes the killing a turning point in her relationship with Alfred Onehube and connects their private grief to the wider danger of opposing profitable forest destruction.

The documented logging and attack

Mayara, whom Sapatisia remembers as a dark mestizo activist and as a sister, daughter, and lover, took a foreign journalist to a protected sanctuary where red mahogany logs lay cut on the ground. The timber butts were still wet. When the cutters returned, they carried guns rather than chainsaws. The account gives no further explanation of how they learned of the visit, but Sapatisia concludes that they had known what was happening.

The attack was over within seconds: the cutters fired short bursts, killing Mayara. The episode’s sequence links the exposure of logging to lethal reprisal, without supplying a fuller account of who ordered or carried out the killing. Its setting matters: the sanctuary, a place meant to be protected, is shown instead as a site where forest destruction continues and those who reveal it are in danger.

Sapatisia’s memory and grief

The murder returns to Sapatisia as she lies awake, considering the people who might join forest-restoration work and the threats that could confront them. Her thoughts turn to Mayara, whom she tries not to remember and cannot set aside. The memory moves from Mayara’s activism and the logging site to the photographs documenting her death; Sapatisia dwells on Mayara’s knees, a detail that makes the loss intimate without changing the spare account of the attack.

The recollection also refuses to leave the killing as an isolated incident. Sapatisia knows that workers seeking to restore forests have been attacked and killed, and that interruption of profitable destruction invites reprisals. Mayara’s murder becomes one concrete instance of that danger, while the broader threats—propaganda, violence, and destructive forest practices—remain pressing concerns Sapatisia has yet to explain to the people around her.

Consequences for Sapatisia and Alfred Onehube

After Mayara’s death, Sapatisia and Alfred Onehube endure ten terrible days of grief, betrayal, and confession. Their relationship is already marked by painful disclosures; the murder compounds that crisis rather than resolving it. The two are left exhausted by the scale of their loss, and the narrative places their personal dissolution beside the still larger environmental loss that Sapatisia is struggling to comprehend.

The episode thus joins two forms of devastation without treating them as interchangeable: Mayara’s killing is sudden and directly recalled, while the destruction of forests and the changes to the earth unfold on a wider scale. In Sapatisia’s memory, the murdered activist remains inseparable from the threatened sanctuary and from the risks borne by people who challenge its exploitation.
