Moreno Valley
ErasureMoreno Valley is a turning point in Van Go Jenkins’s flight. As police cars and helicopters pursue him, his car begins to fail and he leaves the freeway; in the city, the pursuit moves from the road into a post office, where his attempted escape ends in his capture.
Arrival During the Pursuit
Van Go Jenkins reaches Moreno Valley after driving through Riverside and missing the freeway route he had intended to take south. With the car nearly out of gas, knocking and shaking, and police cruisers and helicopters still following, he exits the freeway and drives through the city. He waves toward a camera as the pursuit continues, making surveillance part of the scene even before he reaches the post office.
The Post Office
Van Go pulls into a post office, enters, and uses his gun to force the people inside to get down. One elderly woman is slow to comply, and he shouts at her until she does. The location thus changes from a point along his flight into the setting of a hostage standoff, with the people inside caught in the confrontation.
Attempted Escape and Capture
Later, Van Go watches a small red sports car arrive in the post-office lot. Its size makes it difficult for the girl in the car to move across to the passenger side, and he tells her to remain calm while he smiles toward the cameras. When he turns the key, he is suddenly pulled from the car and subdued. The capture closes the episode in Moreno Valley: the same public scrutiny that accompanies his flight is present at its end, while his attempt to turn the arriving car into an escape route fails.
