Holster–Flesh Mansion Sect

Gunsoul

Holster’s bond with the Flesh Mansion Sect is defined by a violation disguised as cultivation: the sect turned her into a Hitobashira, a human being engineered to store qi for others’ use. The procedure damaged her ability to strengthen herself, while leaving her body and core bound to a purpose imposed on her. When the sect later offered a cure as leverage, Holster’s response made plain that its power over her had not ended with her escape. Yuan Guang refused to send her back.

Manufacture and Exploitation

The sect’s control over Holster was not simply a matter of keeping her captive. The procedure that made her a Hitobashira changed how her body handled qi. Rather than process and redistribute qi to reinforce her flesh, her core hungrily stockpiled the energy and gave little back. The energy would go free only when she died. In practical terms, she had been made into a living reservoir, with her own capacity for cultivation sacrificed to the function assigned to her.

Yuan Guang recognized the long-term consequence: Holster would never reach the Second Coil, however much she cycled her qi. He saw her as scarcely better off than a Scrap, a person denied the means to advance and valued chiefly for service to others. The comparison connects her exploitation to the book’s wider hierarchy of cultivators and Scraps, but her condition is more specific: where Scraps are excluded for lacking a qi core, Holster possessed a core reshaped into an instrument of extraction. Her apparent potential concealed a system designed to keep its benefits from becoming her own.

Trafficking and the Promise of a Cure

The sect’s influence continued beyond the procedure. In Fleshmarket, Gayak told Yuan that a Hitobashira had been expected to pass through town on the way to Furyland, coming from the east as Yuan had. The sellers did not arrive, and Gayak suspected Holster was the intended person. His inference was pointed: he smelled a Hitobashira on Yuan and treated her presence as evidence of a disrupted transaction. The exchange presents her not as someone travelling by choice, but as a person being moved through a supply chain.

Gayak then offered a bargain on behalf of the Metallists: they could fix Holster’s core, while the Metallists lacked the knowledge and techniques to perform the operation. The offer promised a material change to the damage the sect had inflicted, but it came attached to the possibility of returning her to the people who had made and exploited her. Yuan rejected the implied threat, warning that anyone who came after her would do so at their peril. Gayak proposed an Unspeakable Vow to guarantee the cure, but the existence of a possible cure did not make the sect’s claim over Holster legitimate or make return safe.

Holster’s Refusal and Yuan’s Protection

When Yuan told Holster that a man from the Flesh Mansion Sect had offered to cure her if Yuan did his bidding, her reaction cut through the apparent practicality of the proposal. She froze, went pale, and shook her head so violently that Yuan feared she would injure herself. She seized his shirt and clung to him, unable to answer in words but unmistakable in her plea: she would not go back. Her fear was not an abstract objection to a difficult choice; it was a physical refusal of renewed contact with the sect.

Orient reassured Holster that the Flesh Mansion Sect was far away and that she was safe with them. Holster still buried her face against Yuan’s shirt and gripped his clothes with all her strength. Orient then stated plainly that Holster had no wish to encounter the sect again. Yuan accepted that refusal rather than treating the proposed cure as worth overriding it. He decided they would find another way and promised the sect would never touch her again. He spent most of the evening beside her in the last car until she fell asleep, turning protection from a threat against pursuers into immediate care for the person who had been threatened.

Consequences and Significance

Holster’s condition also changes Yuan’s understanding of what the sect did. He had not previously cared enough to ask whether a Hitobashira’s curse could be undone; now he wondered whether Holster could be restored to a normal cultivator, both for her sake and to prevent others from exploiting her. The question follows directly from the procedure’s consequences: a cure would mean more than improved cultivation if it could remove the condition that made her a target for use.

Later, Yuan described the Flesh Mansion Sect as having robbed Holster of her freedom and said it would have taken her life had he not intervened. Her condition therefore becomes part of his justification for striking back at the sects in Fleshmarket, even as he recognizes that his ammunition scheme could kill innocents as well. The relationship is both personal and political: Holster’s captivity gives Yuan a concrete reason to oppose the institutions that treat people as resources, while his choice to protect her sets a limit on what he will ask of her in return. The sect’s offer of repair cannot undo the original coercion; Holster’s refusal, and Yuan’s decision to honor it, define the break between its control and the safety he tries to provide.
