Yuan–Revolver
GunsoulYuan–Revolver is a relationship between two Gunsouls that develops from an act of mercy into a deep bond of mentorship, trust, and mutual rescue. Revolver gives Yuan the weapon that marks his first step into the cultivator world; later, Yuan risks and sacrifices what is needed to save Revolver, who in turn recognizes that Yuan has mastered the Gun Path.
Origins in mercy and recognition
Yuan’s connection with Revolver begins at a point when his prospects seem narrow. He had accepted that, born without the potential for a qi core, he belonged among the Scraps who served cultivators. Even after awakening as a cultivator, he had reached only the First Coil. Revolver nevertheless treated him not as disposable but as someone worth helping.
Revolver knew that a Gunsoul’s bullet-core could offer another Gunsoul a powerful source of qi. Yuan later understood that Revolver could have killed him for that advantage, but had let him live instead. In a world where Yuan considered kind and altruistic people rare, that decision became the foundation of his trust in Revolver.
The first gun and a shared purpose
When Yuan learned that those who buried him had taken his iron, he swore that they would pay. Revolver answered by giving him a revolver and holster, explaining that he had stolen the weapon from a bandit. The pistol held six small-caliber .38 bullets, and Yuan knew he would have to make every shot count. He vowed to put three of them in Slash’s head.
The gift was more than immediate firepower. Yuan’s first firearm as a Gunsoul, it had been given to him after he rose from the ditch where Slash had left him. He later remembered it as a marker of his first step into the world of cultivators. Its importance endured even after he blew it up fighting the Rad-Hag: when Holster restored it with feng shui and sutras, Yuan recognized its tiny scratches and understood what the returned weapon meant. The revolver’s sutras divided his power among its six chambers, giving the familiar gift a new use as well as restoring its personal significance.
Companions in danger
The relationship is built through repeated exposure to danger, not simply through the original gift. When The Gun descended on Fleshmarket in a rain of qi-charged bullets, Yuan and Revolver both formed Barriers around themselves and one another. Their two layered domes reflected a shared instinctive understanding of the attack and of how to withstand it.
That danger became personal when Revolver faced The Gun’s coming with quiet acceptance. Yuan’s later choice to destroy Revolver’s cruiser to save him reversed the direction of their earliest exchange: the Gunsoul who had once armed and spared Yuan now depended on Yuan’s intervention. Revolver responded with laughter and sincere gratitude, saying Yuan had saved not only his life but his soul. His promise to repair and polish the cruiser kept the moment grounded in their familiar companionship even after the rescue’s gravity.
Recognition after the cycle
After Yuan mastered the Gun Path, Revolver sensed The Gun within him but recognized that its presence had changed, as though its safety had been engaged. Yuan explained that The Gun was part of him, but that he was greater now; he had become the Gunman. Revolver’s response mixed relief with confusion: he struggled to believe that Yuan had beaten The Gun and that neither of them had died for the other.
The bond therefore culminates not in one Gunsoul replacing the other, but in Yuan reaching a mastery that changes the danger surrounding them both. Revolver’s early mercy helped make Yuan’s survival possible; Yuan’s final rescue returned that care in a form that saved Revolver’s life and soul. Their friendship gives the Gun Path a countercurrent to its predatory logic: where one Gunsoul might consume another for strength, these two repeatedly choose to preserve and aid each other.
